A Milestone Moment

Part 13

Ashley sat in the waiting room, fidgeting with her hands as she glanced at the clock on the wall for what felt like the hundredth time. She was 12 weeks pregnant now, and she couldn't wait to see her baby on the ultrasound screen for the first time. Avan had promised to come with her, but he was running late, stuck in a meeting that was going to spill over into lunchtime. She had tried to reassure him that it was okay, that she understood, but a part of her couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. The nurse called her name, and Ashley stood up, smoothing out her dress and making her way to the examination room. The sonographer, a friendly woman with a warm smile, greeted her and introduced herself as Sarah. "So, this is your first scan, right?" Sarah asked, nodding at the clipboard in her hand. Ashley nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. "Yes, it is. I'm really looking forward to seeing the baby for the first time." Sarah smiled. "It's always a special moment. Let's get started, shall we?" She asked Ashley to lie down on the examination table and then began to apply the gel to her abdomen. Ashley felt a slight chill as the cold gel touched her skin, but she was too excited to worry about it. As Sarah moved the ultrasound wand over her belly, Ashley watched in fascination as the images appeared on the screen. At first, it was just a blurry mess, but then suddenly, a tiny shape began to take form. Ashley gasped as she saw her baby's tiny heart beating away, the rhythm strong and steady. Tears pricked at the corners of Ashley's eyes as she gazed at the screen, her heart overflowing with love and wonder. "Is that...?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Sarah smiled. "Yes, that's your baby's heart beating. And look, I think I can see the head and the body too." As Sarah continued to examine her, Ashley felt a sense of awe wash over her. She had known that she was pregnant, of course, but seeing her baby on the screen like this made it all feel so much more real. Just as Sarah was finishing up, Avan burst into the room, out of breath and apologetic. "I'm so sorry I'm late," he said, rushing over to Ashley's side. "I got held up in a meeting." Ashley smiled, feeling a little relieved that he was there now. "It's okay," she said, taking his hand. "I was just getting started." Avan gazed at the screen, his eyes wide with wonder. "Wow," he breathed. "There they are." Together, they watched as Sarah showed them their baby's tiny features, the shape of its head, and the movement of its tiny limbs. Ashley felt Avan's hand squeeze hers, and she knew that he was feeling just as overwhelmed with emotion as she was. As they left the examination room, Ashley turned to Avan with a smile. "That was amazing," she said, her eyes shining with tears. Avan wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "I know," he said. "I'm so grateful we got to experience that together." But as they walked out of the hospital, Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of their journey together. There were still so many unknowns ahead, so many challenges to face. And yet, with Avan by her side, she felt ready to take on whatever came their way.
