Unraveling the Threads of Fate

Part 42

Victoria took a deep breath as she turned to James, who was standing by the window, his eyes fixed on her with a mix of curiosity and concern. "You've been wanting to know something, haven't you?" she asked, her voice steady. James nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "About the other Victoria," he said, his voice low. "Why she left me behind." Victoria felt a pang of guilt, knowing that she had been putting off this conversation. She had rehearsed her response, but she still felt a sense of trepidation. "I think I can help explain," she said, taking a seat on the couch. "You see, I have my own James, back in my own world." James' eyes widened, and he took a step closer to her. "What do you mean?" he asked, his voice filled with interest. Victoria took a deep breath before continuing. "My James... he's a good man, but after my attack, he became distant. He started to pull away from me, and I couldn't understand why. I felt like I was losing him, and it was tearing me apart." She paused, collecting her thoughts. "I started to wonder if he felt guilty about what happened to me, if he thought he had something to do with the attack." James' expression softened, and he took another step closer to her. "I'm so sorry, Victoria," he said, his voice filled with empathy. "I can only imagine how hard that must have been for you." Victoria shook her head, her eyes welling up with tears. "It's not your fault, James. It's just... I felt like I no longer belonged in my old world. After my throat was slit, everything felt different. The people, the places, even the memories we shared felt tainted. I felt like I was stuck in a nightmare, and I couldn't wake up." Myra and Doc exchanged a concerned glance, but they remained silent, letting Victoria continue. "I think that's why the other Victoria left you behind," Victoria said, her voice barely above a whisper. "She felt like she couldn't stay in a world that had hurt her so deeply. She needed to move on, to find a new sense of purpose." James nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. "I see," he said, his voice soft. "I think I understand now." Victoria smiled weakly, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "I'm glad I could explain," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. But as they sat there, basking in the warmth of their newfound understanding, Victoria's mind wandered back to the mystery that still lingered. She was determined to solve her own murder, to find out who was behind the attack that had changed her life forever. And she knew that she couldn't do it alone; she needed James and Myra by her side. "Let's get to work," Victoria said, her eyes sparkling with determination. "We have a killer to catch, and I have a feeling that we're running out of time."
