Chapter 1: Before the Ruins

Part 1

The world was never supposed to end like this. Tony Wyzek, a young boy of 13, huddled in the cramped, dusty attic of his family's old house, listening to the chaos below. The once blue skies were now a thick, choking haze, and the air reeked of smoke and ash. Outside, the sounds of screams, explosions, and crumbling buildings filled the air. The Mushroom War had been raging for what felt like an eternity, and Tony's world was crumbling around him. He clutched a small, tattered backpack to his chest, the only thing he had managed to salvage from the chaos. It contained a few bottles of water, some canned food, and a first-aid kit – meager supplies, but better than nothing. Tony's eyes darted towards the small window, covered in a thick layer of grime, as he wondered if it was safe to venture out. His family... he hadn't seen them in days. His parents had disappeared during a botched evacuation attempt, and his younger sister, Emma, had been separated from him in the chaos. Tony had been on his own ever since, scavenging for food and shelter in a desperate bid to survive. As he listened to the sounds of destruction below, Tony's mind wandered back to the days before the war. He remembered playing video games with his friends, riding his bike through the park, and laughing with his family over dinner. It all seemed like a distant memory now, a life he would never know again. The attic creaked and groaned, and Tony's head jerked up, his heart racing. He waited, holding his breath, but the sounds outside didn't change. Slowly, he made his way down the creaky stairs, his eyes scanning the dimly lit hallway for any signs of danger. The house was quiet, the only sound the creaking of the old wooden floorboards beneath his feet. Tony moved cautiously, his senses on high alert, as he made his way to the front door. He peeked through the peephole, and his heart sank. The street was a desolate wasteland. Buildings lay in ruins, their windows shattered, their walls cracked and broken. The once-manicured lawns were now overgrown and littered with debris. Tony's neighborhood, once a thriving community, was now a barren, post-apocalyptic landscape. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for what lay ahead. The world outside was harsh and unforgiving, but Tony was determined to survive. He slowly opened the door, his eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of movement. As he stepped out into the unknown, Tony felt a strange sensation, like the air around him was shifting, changing. He looked up to see a massive mushroom cloud rising in the distance, its cap stretching towards the sky like a giant, fungal monolith. The world was ending, and Tony was just trying to stay alive. Little did he know, this was only the beginning of his journey, one that would take him to a place called the Land of Ooo, a realm of wonder and danger, where the very fabric of reality was twisted and distorted. Tony took his first step forward, into the unknown, and the ruins of his old world disappeared behind him.
