**The Unexpected Return**
Part 12
About an hour had passed since Adrian's initial visit, and I had managed to drift off into a restless sleep. But my peace was short-lived, as a knock at the door jolted me awake. I groggily got out of bed and made my way to the door, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I hesitated for a moment, wondering who could be visiting at such a late hour. I cautiously approached the door and peered through the peephole. My heart sank as I saw Adrian standing on my porch, his eyes bleary and his movements unsteady. I took a deep breath and opened the door, trying to sound more awake than I felt. "Adrian, what are you doing here?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral. Adrian swayed slightly, his eyes focusing on me with difficulty. "Hey, I was looking for a place to crash," he slurred, his words barely intelligible. "I'm not really feeling up to driving home right now." I sighed, realizing that he was even drunker than before. I could smell the sweet scent of liquor wafting from his breath, and his eyes had a glazed-over look that made me worry about his safety. "Come on in," I said finally, stepping aside to let him enter. "But just for the night, and only because it's not safe for you to drive." Adrian nodded gratefully, stumbling into my living room. I helped him onto the couch, where he collapsed with a soft thud. I covered him with a blanket, trying to make him as comfortable as possible. As I looked at him, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. Part of me was annoyed that he was disrupting my life again, but another part of me was concerned for his well-being. He was clearly in no shape to take care of himself, and I couldn't just leave him to sleep on the streets. I went to get him a glass of water, hoping that it would help him sober up a bit. As I handed it to him, he took a sip, his eyes fluttering open. "Thanks," he muttered, his voice still slurred. "I'm sorry to be such a burden." I shook my head, trying to reassure him. "You're not a burden, Adrian. Just try to get some rest, okay?" He nodded, his eyes already starting to droop. I watched as he drifted off to sleep, his chest rising and falling with each slow breath. As I stood there, looking at him, I couldn't help but wonder what was going on with him. What was driving him to act so strangely, and what secrets was he hiding? I pushed those thoughts aside, telling myself that I would deal with them later. For now, I just needed to make sure he was safe. I went back to my bedroom, trying to get some more rest. But as I lay in bed, I couldn't shake off the feeling that Adrian's presence in my life was going to cause a lot more trouble than I was prepared for.
