"Uncovering the Dark Past"
Part 10
The words hung in the air, and I could feel the weight of Maya's secrets bearing down on her. Detective James's expression was stern, but there was a hint of compassion in her eyes. "Maya, I know you're scared, but I need you to tell me the truth," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "What happened between you and Alex's brother, Ethan?" Maya's eyes dropped to the floor, and she shook her head. I could feel her tension, her fear. She squeezed my hand, and I knew she was drawing strength from me. "It was a long time ago," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I was 15, and Ethan was 18. He...he kidnapped me. Took me to an abandoned house on the outskirts of town. He kept me there for a year, physically and emotionally abusing me. He raped me, repeatedly." I felt a surge of anger and sadness, and I wanted to lash out at the thought of what Maya had endured. I pulled her closer, trying to offer what comfort I could. "I'm so sorry, Maya," I said, my voice shaking with emotion. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that." Maya's eyes flicked up to mine, and I could see the pain and shame there. "It wasn't your fault," I said, trying to reassure her. "You didn't do anything to deserve that." Detective James nodded, her expression grim. "I believe you, Maya. And I want you to know that you're safe now. We're going to do everything we can to find Alex and bring him home safely." Maya's eyes dropped to the floor again, and she took a deep breath. "Ethan is dead," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He died in a car accident a few years after...after he let me go. But Alex...he doesn't know what his brother did. He thinks I'm just some crazy person who has a grudge against his family." Detective James's expression softened, and she nodded. "We'll handle Alex with care, Maya. But I need you to tell me more about what happened. Can you tell me about the incident that the officer mentioned earlier?" Maya nodded, and I could feel her steeling herself. "It was a year after Ethan let me go," she said, her voice firm. "The police found out what he had done, and they were going to arrest him. But he...he had connections, and he was able to talk his way out of it. I was the one who ended up being charged with...with making false accusations." I felt a surge of outrage at the thought of what Maya had endured. She had been a victim, and she had been punished for it. "That's not fair," I said, my voice shaking with anger. Maya's eyes flicked up to mine, and I could see the pain and shame still there. But I could also see a glimmer of determination. "I'm not going to let them silence me again," she said, her voice firm. "I'm going to tell the truth, no matter what."
