A Glimmer of Hope
Part 8
Guard Thane's face was set in a determined expression as he turned to Nurse Elara. "Sedate him, Nurse. We can't risk him harming anyone else, including himself." Nurse Elara nodded, her eyes darting to Link, who was still gazing up at Zelda with a mixture of fear and fury in his eyes. But as she reached for the sedatives, Zelda stepped forward, her grip on Link's wrist tightening. "Wait," she said, her voice firm. "Don't sedate him. Not yet, at least." Guard Thane's expression turned skeptical. "Your Highness, he's still a danger to himself and others. We can't risk-" But Zelda cut him off, her eyes locked on Link's. "Look at him, Guard Thane. He's not raging anymore. He's scared, and I think I can reach him." Nurse Elara hesitated, her eyes darting to Zelda and then back to Guard Thane. "I agree with the princess," she said slowly. "General anesthesia might be too much for him. If we intubate him, we'll have to put him on life-support, and that could make things worse." Guard Thane's face darkened. "We can't take that risk, Nurse. He's a danger to-" Zelda interrupted him again, her voice soft but insistent. "Please, Guard Thane. Just give me a chance. If we can get him free from all of this," she gestured to the restraints and the dungeon, "it might help him calm down. He might start to come back to us." Guard Thane's expression softened slightly, and he exchanged a glance with Nurse Elara. The nurse nodded, and Guard Thane turned back to Zelda. "Alright, Your Highness. We'll try it your way. But if he shows any sign of aggression, we're sedating him and putting him on life-support." Zelda nodded, her eyes never leaving Link's face. As the guard and nurse stepped back, Zelda turned her attention to Link. She spoke softly, her voice a gentle stream of reassurance. "It's okay, Link. I'm here. I'm not going to let anything happen to you." Link's eyes locked on hers, and for a moment, Zelda thought she saw a glimmer of recognition, a spark of the Link she knew. She took a deep breath and began to work on the restraints, her hands moving carefully as she tried to free Link from his bonds. Link watched her, his eyes wary, but he didn't struggle. Zelda's heart swelled with hope as she realized that maybe, just maybe, she could reach him after all.
