Morning Reprimand

Part 78

Morning sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the small apartment. Kageyama stirred, groggily opening his eyes to find himself in an unfamiliar room. Tanaka was nowhere to be seen, but the sound of running water came from the bathroom. Kageyama sat up, rubbing his eyes, trying to remember how he ended up there. As he swung his legs over the side of the bed, a loud crash echoed from outside, followed by Oikawa's voice, "Kageyama! What in the world were you thinking, sneaking out like that?" Kageyama's eyes widened as he recognized Oikawa's scolding tone. He hastily got out of bed and rushed to the door, flinging it open to find Oikawa standing in the hallway, his arms crossed and a stern expression on his face. "I could've killed you, you idiot!" Oikawa exclaimed, his voice rising. "I wake up to find you're gone, and I've been searching all night. What possessed you to go out alone?" Kageyama looked down, feeling a flush rise to his cheeks. "I...I just needed some air," he mumbled. Oikawa's expression turned incredulous. "Air? At that hour? With those thugs after you? You're not even thinking anymore, are you?" Kageyama shifted uncomfortably, knowing Oikawa was right. He had been reckless, and it could have cost him dearly. Tanaka emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist, and a calm smile on his face. "Good morning, Oikawa," he said, his voice smooth as silk. Oikawa's glare turned to Tanaka. "And what do you know about this, Tanaka? You're not exactly innocent in this situation." Tanaka's smile never wavered. "I found Kageyama wandering the streets. He was in a bit of a state. I offered him a place to stay for the night." Oikawa's expression turned skeptical. "A place to stay? In your apartment? Alone?" Kageyama felt his face grow even hotter as Tanaka's smile faltered for a moment before he regained his composure. "It was a safe place, Oikawa," Tanaka said firmly. "He needed a place to crash, and I offered him my spare room. That's all." Oikawa's arms remained crossed, his eyes narrowing. "I'm watching you, Tanaka. Both of you. I don't trust you." Kageyama felt a pang of guilt, knowing that Oikawa's distrust was justified. He had put himself in a vulnerable position, and now he was facing the consequences. Tanaka stepped forward, his eyes locked on Oikawa's. "I understand your concerns, Oikawa. But I assure you, Kageyama is safe with me. For now, let's focus on getting him back to the team's lodging without drawing any more attention to ourselves." Oikawa's expression softened slightly, but his voice remained firm. "Fine. Let's get moving. And Kageyama, you're going to have to explain this to Daichi and the others. This isn't over." With that, Oikawa turned and strode down the hallway, expecting Kageyama and Tanaka to follow. Kageyama hesitated, unsure of what lay ahead, but Tanaka's gentle nudge encouraged him to move forward, back into the uncertain world of volleyball and his complicated relationships.
