Chapter 11: A Moment of Mercy
Part 10
As they walked, Scorch couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and admiration for Sir Valoric, who had been quietly observing the scene with the bandits. She had expected him to be angry or frustrated, but instead, he seemed... pleased. "You're really taking to this whole 'not killing people' thing, aren't you?" Scorch asked with a smile. Sir Valoric chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I suppose I am," he said. "It's not often that one gets to show mercy and still come out on top. I must admit, I'm rather enjoying the feeling." Scorch laughed, a deep rumbling sound that caused Sir Valoric to grin. "I'm glad to see you're finding joy in the little things," she said. "Perhaps one day you'll be able to show mercy to everyone you meet." As they continued on their journey, the sun beat down on them, warming their skin and lifting their spirits. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the sound of birdsong, and Scorch felt a sense of peace settle over her. She was grateful for the company of her friend, and for the chance to start anew. As they approached the town, Scorch's stomach growled with hunger. She had been so focused on their journey that she had forgotten to eat breakfast, and now she was famished. Sir Valoric, sensing her distress, suggested they stop at the local tavern for a meal. The tavern was a bustling hub of activity, with patrons laughing and chatting over mugs of ale and plates of food. Scorch and Sir Valoric made their way to the bar, where they were greeted by the friendly barkeep. "What can I get for you two?" he asked, wiping his hands on a dirty apron. Scorch ordered a massive plate of roasted meat and vegetables, while Sir Valoric opted for a hearty stew. They took a table by the window, where they could watch the townspeople milling about outside. As they waited for their food to arrive, Scorch leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face. She was grateful for this moment of peace, and for the chance to start anew. When their food arrived, Scorch dug in with gusto, savoring the flavors and textures of the meal. Sir Valoric, too, enjoyed his stew, and they chatted and laughed as they ate. As they finished their meal, Scorch leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You know, I've been thinking," she said. Sir Valoric raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What's that?" Scorch grinned. "I think it's time we started asking questions. We can't just wander around, reacting to threats as they arise. We need to start seeking out answers." Sir Valoric nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I agree. But where do we start?" Scorch's grin grew wider. "I have a few ideas. Let's see if we can gather some information around town." With that, they finished their meal, and set off into the unknown, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
