A Step Forward

Part 7

Two hours had passed since the chemotherapy treatment began, and Ashley felt a mix of relief and exhaustion as she was disconnected from the IV. Sarah, the nurse, smiled and patted her hand. "You did great, Ashley. The treatment went smoothly, and you're one step closer to beating this cancer." Ashley smiled weakly, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over her. She was doing this; she was fighting for her life. With a newfound sense of determination, Ashley stood up, adjusting her clothes and smoothing out her hair. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for the next part of her journey. Sarah handed her a folder containing some information and instructions for the next treatment. "Take care of yourself, Ashley. You're not alone in this. You have a lot of people who care about you and are rooting for you." Ashley nodded, taking the folder and tucking it under her arm. As she made her way out of the treatment room, Ashley's eyes scanned the waiting area for a familiar face. Her mom was supposed to pick her up, but she was running late. Ashley checked her phone for what felt like the hundredth time, but there were no messages or calls from her mom. Just as she was starting to feel a bit anxious, Ashley spotted a small, energetic figure running towards her. Ender's bright blue eyes sparkled with excitement as he waved enthusiastically, his blonde hair sticking up in every direction. "Ashley! Mom said you were done!" he exclaimed, throwing his arms around her waist. Ashley smiled, hugging him tightly. "I'm done, sweetie. I'm all done." She buried her face in his hair, inhaling the sweet scent of his shampoo. Ender pulled back, his eyes shining with concern. "How did it go?" he asked, his voice serious for a moment. Ashley smiled, trying to reassure him. "It went great, kiddo. I'm one step closer to getting better." She ruffled his hair, trying to lighten the mood. As they waited for Ashley's mom to arrive, Ender chattered excitedly about his day, telling Ashley all about his adventures at school. Ashley listened, laughing and smiling, feeling a sense of normalcy wash over her. For a moment, she forgot about the cancer, the treatments, and the uncertainty of it all. All that mattered was this moment, with Ender by her side. Just then, a car pulled up, and Ashley's mom stepped out, a warm smile on her face. "Hey, guys! Sorry I'm late. I got stuck in traffic." She rushed over to Ashley and Ender, opening her arms for a hug. Ashley smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She was grateful to have her mom, Ender, and Alex in her life, supporting her through this difficult time. As they drove home, Ashley felt a sense of hope and determination. She was going to get through this, and she was going to come out stronger on the other side.
