"Unraveling the Truth"

Part 3

As I sat there, looking at Nick's resolute face, I knew that I had to tread carefully. I couldn't push him too hard, or he might clam up completely. But I also couldn't just let it drop, not when I had a feeling that something was seriously wrong. I nodded, trying to appear understanding. "Okay, sweetie, I get it. You need some space. But I want you to know that I'm here for you, no matter what. If you ever want to talk about anything, my door is always open." Nick smiled, a small, tentative smile. "Thanks, Mum. I appreciate that." But as the evening wore on, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was missing something. I decided to take a different approach, to try and get to the bottom of things without directly confronting Nick. I pulled out my phone and sent a text to Charlie. "Hey, how's everything going? I feel like Nick is hiding something from me. Do you know anything?" As I waited for Charlie's response, I busied myself with some household chores. But my mind kept wandering back to Nick, and what could be causing him such distress. Twenty minutes later, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from Charlie. "Hey, I think we need to talk. Can we meet up for coffee?" I quickly agreed, and we made plans to meet at a local café the next day. As I lay in bed that night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. What could Charlie possibly have to tell me? And how was it going to affect Nick and our family? The next morning, I arrived at the café early, sipping on a cup of coffee as I waited for Charlie to arrive. When he walked in, looking a bit nervous, I knew that something was up. "Hey, thanks for meeting me," he said, sitting down across from me. "I've been wanting to talk to you about Nick." I leaned in, my heart racing with anticipation. "What is it? What's going on?" Charlie took a deep breath before speaking. "It's just...Nick's been acting really strange lately. He's been getting these mysterious texts and he's been really withdrawn. I think something's going on that he doesn't want us to know about." My mind was racing with questions, but before I could ask any of them, Charlie dropped a bombshell. "I think he's in trouble, and I think it's connected to that new friend he's been hanging out with. The one he met online?" My eyes widened in shock. "What do you mean? Who is this friend?"
