A Shift in Allegiances

Part 4

As the warm, golden light continued to grow, Maximus felt a sense of excitement building within him. He couldn't explain why, but being around Hermione made him feel like anything was possible. They continued to talk, their conversation flowing easily as they discovered more and more common interests. Hermione was fascinated by Maximus's stories of the Slytherin common room, hidden beneath the lake, and the clever ways they had devised to access it without being seen. Maximus, in turn, was impressed by Hermione's knowledge of Gryffindor history, and the bravery of her ancestors who had fought against the Dark Lord. As they talked, the hours slipped away, unnoticed. The corridor, once dimly lit, was now bathed in a soft, ethereal glow. The portraits on the walls seemed to be watching them, their subjects' eyes gleaming with interest. Just as they were getting to the good part of a particularly juicy story, a loud noise echoed down the corridor. The sound of footsteps, heavy and deliberate, made them both turn to see a figure emerging from the shadows. It was Draco Malfoy, his eyes narrowed as he took in the scene before him. "Well, well, well," he sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "Look what we have here. A Slytherin and a Gryffindor, getting along famously. How...amusing." Maximus felt a surge of tension as Draco approached them. He knew that his rival's presence could only mean trouble. Hermione, sensing his unease, placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "Don't worry," she whispered. "I've got this." But before she could say anything, Draco had already reached them. His eyes flicked from Maximus to Hermione, and back again. "I see you're slumming it with the enemy, Maximus," he sneered. "I didn't know you had a taste for Gryffindor company." Maximus bristled, feeling his temper rise. But before he could respond, Hermione stepped forward. "Draco, what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice firm. Draco shrugged, his eyes glinting with amusement. "I could ask you the same thing, Granger. But I think I already know the answer. You're consorting with the enemy, just like always." Hermione's eyes flashed with anger, but Maximus could see the fear lurking beneath. He knew that Draco had a reputation for being ruthless, and he wondered what he wanted. "Let's just say that I'm exploring my options," Hermione said, her voice steady. "And I'm not afraid to talk to anyone, no matter what their house affiliation." Draco snorted. "You're either with us, or you're against us, Granger. There's no middle ground." Maximus felt a surge of anger at Draco's words. He knew that he had to defend Hermione, no matter what. "I think Hermione can make her own decisions, Malfoy," he said, his voice firm. Draco's eyes narrowed, his face twisting with anger. "You're just a pawn in the game, Maximus," he sneered. "You don't know what's at stake." But Maximus was undeterred. He stood his ground, his eyes locked on Draco's. "I know that I'm not afraid to make my own choices," he said. "And I'm not afraid to stand up for what I believe in." The air was thick with tension as the two boys faced off. Hermione watched, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew that this was a turning point, a moment that could change everything. And then, just as it seemed like things were going to escalate, Draco turned and walked away, leaving them both breathing a sigh of relief. As they watched him go, Hermione turned to Maximus, a look of gratitude on her face. "Thanks for standing up for me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Maximus smiled, feeling a sense of pride. "Anytime," he said. "I'm not going to let anyone push you around." And with that, they shared a look, a look that spoke volumes about their feelings for each other. They both knew that their chance encounter had sparked something special, something that could change the course of their lives forever.
