A Mother's Desperation

Part 15

Ashley's voice trembled as she continued to explain her situation to Karen. "My mom's been sick for a while now, and it's getting worse. The doctors say there's nothing more they can do, and...and she's dying." Ashley's eyes welled up with tears as she struggled to hold back her emotions. Karen's expression was sympathetic, but firm. "I'm so sorry, Ashley. Losing a loved one is never easy. But I need to understand how this has affected you and Ender." Ashley took a deep breath and continued, her voice cracking. "It's been hard, okay? I'm only 19, and I'm trying to take care of my mom and Ender on my own. But it's getting too much. I don't have enough money, and...and I'm just so tired all the time." As Ashley spoke, her emotions began to get the better of her. She felt a lump form in her throat, and before she knew it, she was crying. "I don't want to lose my son," she sobbed. "I love him so much, and I try so hard to take care of him, but it's just not working. I'm failing him, and I don't know what to do." Karen's expression softened, and she reached out to Ashley, offering her a box of tissues. Ashley blew her nose and continued, her voice shaking. "My mom is dying, and I'm losing everything. I didn't mean to steal, but I just wanted to feed him. I wanted to make sure he was okay." Karen nodded, her eyes filled with compassion. "Let's talk about Ender," Karen said gently. "From what I've seen so far, he's a bright and curious boy, but he's also showing some signs of distress. He's been clingy and anxious, and he's having trouble sleeping. I think he's picking up on your stress and anxiety, Ashley." Ashley felt a pang of guilt, knowing that she had been struggling to cope with her own emotions, let alone Ender's needs. Karen continued, "As his mother, you're his primary source of comfort and security. But with your mom's illness and your own struggles, Ender is feeling the effects. We need to get him some support, and we need to get you some help too." Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She knew she needed help, and she was grateful that Karen and the authorities were willing to offer it. As Karen began to outline a plan to help Ashley and Ender, Ashley felt a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, things were going to start looking up. But as she glanced over at Ender, who was quietly eating his snack, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was running out of time. Her mom was dying, and Ashley was desperate to hold on to everything that mattered: her son, her family, and her own sense of self.
