**A Temporary Refuge**

Part 20

As Ashley walked into the shelter, she was immediately hit with the smell of disinfectant and the sound of murmured conversations. She felt a pang of nervousness as she scanned the room, taking in the rows of cots and the scattered personal belongings of the residents. A woman with a kind face and a warm smile approached her, introducing herself as Karen, the shelter's manager. "Hi, welcome to our shelter," Karen said, her eyes taking in Ashley's disheveled appearance. "Are you looking for a place to stay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. "Yeah, I need a place to stay for a little while. I'm pregnant and I don't have anywhere else to go." Karen's expression softened. "Well, you've come to the right place. We have a special program for pregnant women and mothers with young children. We can provide you with a safe and comfortable place to stay until you're back on your feet." Ashley felt a surge of gratitude towards Karen. "Thank you so much," she said, tears welling up in her eyes. "I really appreciate it." Karen led Ashley to a small room with a cot, a dresser, and a bathroom. "This will be your room for now," she said. "We'll get you set up with some food and clothing, and we'll help you get back on your feet." Ashley felt a sense of relief wash over her as she collapsed onto the cot, feeling exhausted from her long day. She couldn't believe she was actually going to have a place to stay, even if it was just temporary. As she lay there, Ashley couldn't help but think about her situation. She had applied for a job at the grocery store, and she was hoping to hear back from them soon. She knew she needed to get back to work, not just for herself, but for her baby. The next morning, Ashley woke up feeling refreshed and renewed. She got dressed and made her way to the shelter's dining room, where she was greeted with a warm breakfast and a friendly smile from Karen. "Good morning, Ashley," Karen said. "I heard back from the grocery store, and they're willing to give you an interview today. Would you like me to help you get ready?" Ashley's heart skipped a beat. "Really? That's amazing," she said, feeling a surge of excitement. "Yes, please, I'd love your help." With Karen's assistance, Ashley got dressed and ready for her interview. She felt a sense of determination wash over her as she headed out the door, ready to take on the day and start building a new life for herself and her baby.
