The Darkest Hour
Part 13
Three weeks had passed since Ashley's diagnosis, and her world had been turned upside down. The once vibrant and energetic person was now a shadow of her former self. Daily chemo and radiation sessions had taken a toll on her body, leaving her frail and weak. She had lost so much weight that she was now wearing kids' clothes, a harsh reminder of her drastically changed appearance. The mirror reflected a pale, gaunt face with sunken eyes and a bald head, a result of the aggressive treatment. Ashley's days were filled with a never-ending cycle of pain, nausea, and vomiting. She couldn't taste food anymore, and even the thought of eating made her stomach churn. Erica was by her side as much as she could, offering words of encouragement and support, but Ashley could see the worry and concern etched on her friend's face. Erica had been Ashley's rock throughout this ordeal, but she was now facing her own dilemma. Just a few days ago, she had discovered that she was pregnant, and she was torn about whether to share the news with Ashley. She knew that this could be a happy distraction for her friend, but she was also worried about how Ashley would react. Would she feel guilty for bringing a new life into the world while she was struggling to stay alive herself? As Erica sat beside Ashley, holding her hand and trying to comfort her, she couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. She was happy about her pregnancy, but she was also scared about how it would affect her friendship with Ashley. She knew that she had to be there for her friend, but she also couldn't keep this secret to herself for much longer. Ashley looked up at Erica, her eyes weak but full of gratitude. "Thanks for being here, Erica," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I don't know what I would do without you." Erica smiled, trying to hold back tears. "You'll never have to find out, Ash," she said, squeezing Ashley's hand. "I'll be here for you, no matter what." But as Erica looked at Ashley, she knew that she couldn't keep her secret hidden for much longer. She had to find a way to tell Ashley about her pregnancy, but she was scared about how her friend would react. Would it bring Ashley comfort, or would it add to her already unbearable burden? Only time would tell.
