Chapter 1: The Weight of Family Expectations
Part 1
Luisa Rivera scrubbed the last of the stubborn soap scum from the bathroom tiles, her movements methodical and precise. She had always taken pride in her work as a seamstress, but lately, it seemed like the only thing she was good for was keeping the Rivera family traditions alive. Her mind wandered to the upcoming Día de los Muertos celebration, and the pressure her family placed on her to excel in her role. As she rinsed the sponge and wrung it out, Luisa's thoughts drifted to her brother Miguel, who had always been the favored child. His passion for music had earned him a special place in their family's heart, and Luisa couldn't help but feel like she lived in his shadow. She pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the task at hand. The bathroom was spotless now, and Luisa moved on to the next task: helping her mother prepare the ofrenda for the upcoming celebration. She walked into the kitchen, where her mother, Julieta, was busily arranging marigolds and photographs of their ancestors on a beautifully crafted wooden altar. "Luisa, m'ija, come help me with this," Julieta called out, not looking up from her work. Luisa obliged, carefully placing a vase filled with marigolds on the ofrenda. "Mamá, have you heard from Miguel lately?" she asked, trying to sound casual. Julieta's expression turned stern. "You know Miguel is busy with his music, Luisa. He doesn't have time to visit as often as we'd like." Luisa nodded, feeling a pang of sadness. She missed her brother dearly, but their family's expectations had driven them apart. She changed the subject, asking her mother about the traditional foods they would prepare for the celebration. As they worked on the ofrenda, Luisa's thoughts turned to her own dreams and aspirations. She had always been fascinated by the stories of her ancestors, who had been part of a long line of skilled artisans. Perhaps, Luisa thought, it was time to explore her own creative side, rather than simply following in her family's footsteps. Just then, the doorbell rang, signaling the arrival of their eccentric and lovable neighbor, Tía Bertha. Luisa's eyes lit up as she anticipated the lively conversation that was sure to follow. But little did Luisa know, her life was about to take a dramatic turn, one that would challenge everything she thought she knew about herself, her family, and her place in the world.
