A Change in Perspective
Part 6
Amari couldn't help but notice that Nigee was acting strange. One day, he was making fun of her hair, and the next, he was being kind to her. At first, she thought it was just a ruse to get her to let her guard down, but as the days went by, she started to see a different side of him. She would see him helping out a younger student with their math homework, or holding the door open for someone behind him. It was a side of Nigee that she hadn't seen before, and it made her wonder if she had misjudged him. As she walked down the hallway, Amari caught Nigee looking at her. For a moment, they just stared at each other, and Amari felt a shiver run down her spine. She quickly looked away, telling herself that she was just being silly. But as the days went by, Amari found herself looking for Nigee in the hallways. She would catch glimpses of him, and she would feel a pang of curiosity. What was he thinking? Why was he being so kind all of a sudden? Nigee, on the other hand, was trying to gauge Amari's reaction. He had started to subtly change his behavior around her, trying to see if she would notice. He would hold the door open for her, or offer to help her with her books. At first, Amari didn't seem to notice. She would just walk past him, not even acknowledging his presence. But as the days went by, Nigee started to see a change in her. She would smile at him, or say hello in the hallway. It was a small start, but Nigee was encouraged. He had been trying to get Amari's attention for so long, and finally, it seemed like she was starting to notice him. One day, as Amari was walking to her locker, Nigee caught up to her. "Hey, Amari," he said, falling into step beside her. "How's it going?" Amari looked at him warily, unsure of what to make of his sudden friendliness. "It's going," she said, shrugging. Nigee nodded, not seeming to mind her brusqueness. "I saw that you were struggling in math class," he said. "Do you want me to help you with your homework?" Amari was taken aback. No one had ever offered to help her with her homework before, especially not Nigee. She looked at him skeptically, wondering if he was just trying to trick her. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that she hadn't seen before. It was kindness, and concern, and a genuine desire to help. For a moment, Amari felt a pang of uncertainty. Maybe she had misjudged Nigee. Maybe he wasn't as bad as she thought. "Okay," she said finally, taking a chance. "That would be great, thanks." Nigee grinned, looking pleased with himself. "I'll meet you at the library after school," he said. "We can work on your math homework together." As Amari walked away, she couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. What was going on with Nigee? And why was she starting to see him in a different light?
