"Reflections by the Water's Edge"
Part 7
As they walked, the trees grew closer together, and the underbrush thicker, until Scorch pushed through a curtain of tangled vines and emerged onto the shore of a serene lake. The water's surface reflected the starry sky above, creating a perfect mirror image that seemed to stretch on forever. Scorch approached the water's edge, her claws clicking on the rocks, and gazed out across the lake. Sir Valoric followed, his eyes scanning the surroundings, ever vigilant. Scorch didn't speak, but instead stood there, her eyes fixed on the lake, as if lost in thought. Sir Valoric waited, sensing that she was leading him somewhere, though he wasn't sure where. After a while, Scorch turned to him, her eyes piercing in the darkness. "Why did you save me?" she asked, her voice low and husky. Sir Valoric raised an eyebrow, taken aback by the question. "You know why," he said, his voice calm. "You're my responsibility, Scorch. I took you from that village, after all." Scorch snorted, a low rumbling sound. "You think that gives you the right to decide for me? I'm a dragon woman, a terror of the countryside. I burned homes and crops, and killed anyone who stood in my way. Why would you risk your life to save someone like me?" Sir Valoric took a step forward, his eyes locked on Scorch's. "It's not about what you've done, Scorch. It's about who you are. You're a living being, with a right to freedom. And even if you weren't my responsibility, I would still have helped you. Everyone deserves a chance to start anew, to leave their past behind and forge a new path." Scorch regarded him for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then, she nodded, a small movement. "I see," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You think I'm worth saving, despite all the harm I've caused." Sir Valoric nodded, his jaw set. "I do. And I think that everyone deserves a chance to make amends, to prove themselves anew. You can't change the past, Scorch, but you can work towards a better future. And I'll be here to help you, if you'll let me." Scorch looked away, her eyes drifting back to the lake. The water's surface rippled, as if disturbed by an unseen current. Sir Valoric sensed that she was struggling with something, that she was torn between her past and her desire for a new beginning. He waited, patient, knowing that she needed time to work through her emotions. As the silence stretched out, the stars began to twinkle brighter in the sky above, casting a magical glow over the lake and its surroundings. Scorch remained still, lost in thought, while Sir Valoric stood watch, a guardian of the night, and a friend to the dragon woman by his side.
