Beyond the Classroom Walls

Part 2

Maya couldn't shake off the feeling that Eric was struggling in her class, and as she graded papers and prepared lessons, she found herself thinking about him more often than she'd like to admit. She had a hunch that he was capable of more, but something was holding him back. As she pondered ways to reach him, an idea struck her. She remembered that the University of Texas was having an open house, and she had an extra ticket to a guided tour. The next day, Maya approached Eric after class. "Hey, Eric, can I talk to you for a minute?" she asked, trying to sound casual. Eric looked up from his phone, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "Sure, what's up?" "I was wondering if you'd like to take a tour of the UT campus with me," Maya said, trying to gauge his reaction. Eric raised an eyebrow. "A tour? Why?" Maya smiled. "I think it could be really beneficial for you to see what's out there, especially since you're a junior. Plus, I think it could be a great opportunity for us to talk about your English skills. I've noticed you're struggling a bit in my class, and I think I can help." Eric snorted. "I don't need help." Maya chuckled. "I think we all need help sometimes, Eric. And I'm not just talking about English. I think you're capable of more than you're showing me. Would you be willing to let me help you?" Eric's expression softened, and for a moment, Maya saw a glimmer of vulnerability. "Okay, fine," he said finally. "When is the tour?" The tour was scheduled for the following Saturday, and Maya was excited to spend the day with Eric outside of the classroom. As they walked across the campus, Maya pointed out various landmarks and shared stories about the university's history. Eric listened intently, his eyes scanning the surroundings with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. As they stopped in front of the iconic UT Tower, Maya turned to Eric. "So, what do you think? Is this something you're interested in?" Eric shrugged. "I don't know. I'm not really sure what I want to do yet." Maya nodded understandingly. "That's okay. It's okay to not have it all figured out. But I do know that you're a bright and capable student, and I think you have a lot to offer." As they continued the tour, Maya asked Eric about his interests and strengths, trying to get a better sense of what made him tick. She was surprised to find that they had more in common than she'd initially thought, and their conversation flowed easily. After the tour, Maya suggested they grab coffee at a nearby café. Eric agreed, and as they sat down at a small table, Maya pulled out a notebook and pen. "So, I was thinking that maybe we could work on some of your English skills together," she said. "I'd be happy to tutor you outside of class." Eric looked at her warily, but Maya could see the hint of a question in his eyes. "Why are you doing this?" he asked, his voice low. Maya smiled. "Because I think you're worth it, Eric. And I think you have a lot of potential. Plus, I think it could be really beneficial for both of us." Eric raised an eyebrow, but eventually, he nodded. "Okay, sure. When were you thinking?" Maya grinned, feeling a sense of excitement and possibility. "How about next week? We can start with some of the material we're covering in class, and then go from there." As they made plans, Maya couldn't help but feel a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could reach Eric and help him unlock his full potential. And maybe, just maybe, she could learn a thing or two from him in the process.
