**Cornered**

Part 10

The woman's stern expression seemed to bore into Emily's skin as she stepped further into the apartment, her eyes never leaving Emily's face. The young man's gaze also remained fixed on her, a mixture of recognition and suspicion etched on his features. "Who are you?" he repeated, his voice firm but laced with a hint of curiosity. The woman, who Emily assumed was the young man's sister, moved to stand beside him, her eyes scanning Emily's attire. "And what are you doing in our apartment?" she added, her tone icy. Emily's mind racing, she tried to think of a plausible explanation, but the young man's next words made her realize that she had been recognized. "Wait a minute," he said, his eyes narrowing. "You're the one who broke into my apartment last week, aren't you?" Emily's heart sank as the young man's sister turned to him, her expression shocked. "What? You mean the thief who's been targeting your apartments?" she asked, her voice low and menacing. The young man nodded, his eyes never leaving Emily's face. "Yes, that's her. I should have known you'd try it again." Emily's eyes darted between the two siblings, her mind racing with the realization that she had been caught. She was trapped, with no clear escape route. The young man's sister took a step closer to Emily, her eyes blazing with anger. "You're not going anywhere," she said, her voice cold. "We're going to call the police." Emily's instincts kicked in, and she prepared to make a run for it, but the young man and his sister had her cornered. She was trapped, with no way out. The young man's sister pulled out her phone and dialed a number, her eyes never leaving Emily's face. "Hello, emergency? We need to report a break-in... Yes, we've caught the thief... Apartment 1403... Okay, we'll wait for you." As the young man's sister waited for someone to answer, Emily's mind began to reel with the consequences of her actions. She had been caught, and now she faced the very real possibility of being arrested and charged with theft. The young man's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, a mixture of anger and curiosity etched on his features. "Why?" he asked, his voice low. "Why did you break into my apartment?" Emily hesitated, unsure of how to respond. She had been so focused on getting in and out with the valuable items that she hadn't stopped to consider the consequences of her actions. The young man's sister interrupted her, her voice cold. "Don't bother trying to come up with an excuse," she said. "You're going down for this." As Emily waited for the police to arrive, she couldn't help but wonder how her life had spiraled out of control so quickly. She had always been careful, always planned her moves meticulously, but this time, something had gone wrong. And now, she was paying the price.
