Small Steps Forward
Part 15
A few days had passed since Rachel's intervention, and Ashley was still struggling to find her footing. The depression that had been suffocating her for weeks still lingered, making everyday tasks feel like insurmountable challenges. Despite Rachel's best efforts to coax her out of the house, Ashley had only managed to muster up the energy to take short trips to the grocery store or for walks around the block. The world outside still felt overwhelming, but she was determined to make progress, no matter how small. Ashley's finances were also a constant source of stress. With no job to speak of, she was scraping by on her savings, and the guilt of not being able to provide for Ender weighed heavily on her shoulders. Rachel had been a lifesaver, offering to help with groceries and other essentials, but Ashley couldn't shake the feeling of failure that had settled over her. One day, as she was going through her mail, Ashley came across a flyer for a local job training program. It was designed for single parents, and offered a combination of job skills training and childcare. Ashley's heart skipped a beat as she read through the details. This could be exactly what she needed to get back on her feet. With newfound hope, Ashley picked up the phone and dialed the number on the flyer. After a brief conversation with a program representative, she scheduled an interview for the following day. As she hung up the phone, Ashley felt a spark of determination ignite within her. Maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something new. The next day, Ashley put on her best "I'm a functioning adult" outfit and headed to the interview. She was nervous, but as she walked into the program's office, she was greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The interview itself was straightforward, and Ashley was relieved to find that the program was a good fit for her needs. As she left the office, Ashley felt a sense of accomplishment wash over her. It was a small step, but it was a step forward. And for the first time in weeks, she allowed herself to feel a glimmer of hope. Maybe she could get her life back on track, after all. Over the next few days, Ashley continued to make small steps forward. She started attending the job training program, and was surprised by how much she enjoyed it. She also began to reconnect with old friends, and even made a few new ones. It wasn't easy, and there were still days when the darkness closed in around her, but Ashley was determined to keep moving forward, one small step at a time.
