Integration and Insight

Part 12

As Mori and Jax worked, they chatted easily, their conversation flowing from one topic to another. "So, Jax, how long have you been working here?" Mori asked, dusting a particularly stubborn patch of dust from a shelf. "About three years now," Jax replied, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I was hired as a teenager, and I've been working my way up the ranks ever since. It's not the most glamorous job, but it's honest work and the pay is decent." "That's great," Mori said, impressed. "I'm still getting used to everything. Kaelith can be a bit... intimidating, can't he?" Jax nodded vigorously. "Intimidating is one way to put it. He's demanding, to say the least. But he's fair, in his own way. As long as you do your job and do it well, he leaves you alone." Mori raised an eyebrow. "And what about the other maids? Do they all get along?" Jax leaned in, a conspiratorial look on her face. "Well, there's a few cliques, of course. Elara is the golden girl, always smiling and making sure everyone's happy. But then there's Zephyr, who's always grumbling about something. And Aisha, who's just quiet and keeps to herself. But overall, we all get along pretty well. We have to, really. We're stuck in this place together, after all." Mori laughed, feeling a sense of solidarity with Jax. "That's true. I feel like I'm still getting used to the dynamics here, though. Who's the most friendly, in your opinion?" Jax grinned. "Oh, that would be Elara, hands down. She's always looking out for everyone, making sure we're all doing okay. And she's got a great sense of humor, too. You should see her when she's not on duty – she's a total goofball." As they continued to chat, Mori found herself feeling more and more at ease. She was starting to feel like she was part of the group, like she belonged. But then, out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Kaelith standing in the doorway, watching her. Mori's heart skipped a beat as she turned back to Jax, trying to play it cool. "So, what's the best part about working here?" she asked, trying to sound casual. Jax thought for a moment before responding. "I think it's the little things, really. Like when you're cleaning a room and you find something interesting – a book, or a piece of jewelry, or something. It's like you're uncovering secrets, you know?" Mori smiled, feeling a sense of connection to Jax. "I know exactly what you mean. I love finding hidden things, too." As they finished up their task and headed back to the maid's quarters, Mori couldn't shake the feeling that Kaelith was still watching her. She glanced around, but he was nowhere to be seen. Shrugging it off, she focused on her conversation with Jax, eager to learn more about her new colleagues and the inner workings of the estate.
