Facing Reality
Part 22
Ashley and Ethan walked to the school, the crisp afternoon air a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside them. As they approached Ender's classroom, Ashley could feel her anxiety spiking. She had been dreading this conversation with Ender, and now that it was finally here, she wasn't sure if she was ready. When they arrived at the classroom, Ender's teacher, Mrs. Johnson, greeted them warmly. "Ah, Ashley, thank you for bringing Ender's homework. He's been waiting for it." She handed Ashley a clipboard with a few papers on it. "Actually, I think Ender has a few things to give you as well." Ashley's eyes scanned the room, and her heart sank as she saw Ender sitting at his desk, his arms crossed and a scowl on his face. She walked over to him, Ethan by her side. "Hey, buddy," Ashley said, trying to sound cheerful. "I brought your homework." Ender didn't respond, his eyes fixed on the floor. Ashley felt a pang of guilt and concern. She knew he was still upset about their conversation earlier, and she wasn't sure how to fix it. Ethan knelt down beside Ashley, his eyes locked on Ender's. "Hey, kiddo, we need to talk," he said, his voice gentle. Ender's eyes flicked up to Ethan's, and for a moment, Ashley thought she saw a glimmer of the old Ender, the one who would smile and joke with his dad. But then his expression hardened again, and he looked away. Ashley felt a lump form in her throat as she realized that Ender was hurt, and she didn't know how to make it right. She glanced at Ethan, who was watching her with a questioning expression. "I think we should take him home and talk to him there," Ethan whispered, his eyes never leaving Ender's face. Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. She knew that this conversation was going to be tough, but she was determined to get through it with Ender, and with Ethan by her side. As they left the school, Ender trailing behind them, silent and sullen, Ashley couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them. Would they be able to navigate this new reality, or would it tear them apart? Only time would tell.
