Chapter 1: A Life of Struggle
Part 1
Ashley Frangipane stared blankly at the small, dingy apartment that had become her life. It was a far cry from the comfortable home she had grown up in, where her parents had spoiled her and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. But that was all before she became pregnant with her now 2-year-old son, Theo. The walls of her tiny studio seemed to close in on her as she tried to juggle the responsibilities of being a single mother. As she poured herself a cup of cold coffee from the pot she had made hours ago, Ashley couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. She had always envisioned a different life for herself - one where she finished high school, went to college, and started a career. But those dreams had been shattered the day she found out she was pregnant. Her parents, who had always been supportive and loving, had turned on her. They had kicked her out of the house, citing that she was too young and immature to be a mother. Ashley took a sip of the bitter coffee and winced. She had to get used to the bitter taste of reality, it seemed. She glanced over at Theo, who was busy playing with his blocks on the floor. He was a chubby-cheeked, curly-haired bundle of joy, and Ashley's heart swelled with love for him. But being a single mother was hard. Very hard. As she began to tidy up the apartment, Ashley's mind wandered to her parents. What were they doing right now? Were they thinking about her and Theo? Did they even care? She pushed the thoughts aside, not wanting to get caught up in a cycle of anger and resentment. She had to focus on survival. Ashley had managed to scrape together a meager income by working part-time at a local grocery store. It wasn't much, but it was enough to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Well, sometimes. Okay, not always. There were days when they had to rely on the food bank to get by. As she finished cleaning up, Ashley glanced at the clock on the wall. She had to get to work soon. She hated leaving Theo with the neighbor, Mrs. Jenkins, but she had no choice. The woman was kind and took good care of Theo, but Ashley couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that settled in her stomach every time she left her son behind. Ashley took a deep breath and grabbed her purse. It was time to face another long day of work and struggle. She bent down to give Theo a hug and a kiss. "I'll be back soon, baby," she whispered, trying to sound more confident than she felt. Theo looked up at her with big brown eyes and said "Mama" in his high-pitched voice. Ashley's heart melted, and for a moment, all her worries seemed to fade away. But as she walked out the door, the weight of her responsibilities settled back onto her shoulders. What would the future hold for her and Theo? Only time would tell.
