A Day of Rest and Revelry
Part 19
The morning sun cast a warm glow over the landscape as Scorch and Sir Valoric set out on the road to the city, their footsteps light and carefree. The dragon's wings, though still a bit stiff from the previous day's exertions, felt stronger with each step, and she couldn't help but let out a little flutter of excitement as they approached the city gates. As they entered the city, the sounds of merchants hawking their wares and the clanging of hammers on metal filled the air, a welcome change from the silence of the wilderness. Scorch's ears perked up, and she breathed in deeply, taking in the scents of fresh bread and roasting meats. Sir Valoric led the way, his armor drawing admiring glances from the city's inhabitants. Scorch followed close behind, her scales glinting in the sunlight as she took in the sights and sounds of the bustling city. Their first stop was the city's great hall, where Sir Valoric reported their success in dispatching the goblin threat. The city's leaders, a group of stern-faced men and women, listened intently as the knight recounted their tale, Scorch providing occasional corroborating details. When they finished, the leaders nodded their thanks, and one of them, a portly man with a bushy beard, stepped forward. "We are in your debt, Sir Valoric," he said, his voice booming through the hall. "As a token of our gratitude, we offer you and your... companion a day of rest and revelry in our city. Enjoy our hospitality, and may your stay be filled with joy and relaxation." With that, Scorch and Sir Valoric were free to explore the city as they pleased. They wandered through the market stalls, Scorch marveling at the variety of goods on display. She sampled fresh fruits and cheeses, and even managed to acquire a few shiny trinkets, which she promptly stowed away in her treasure hoard. Sir Valoric, meanwhile, was in high demand. The city's residents, eager to catch a glimpse of the legendary knight, mobbed him with requests for stories and autographs. Scorch watched with a smile as the knight regaled a group of children with tales of his adventures, his face lighting up with laughter. As the day wore on, Scorch and Sir Valoric made their way to the city's famous hot springs, where they spent a blissful hour soaking in the warm waters. Scorch let out a contented sigh as the heat seeped into her scales, and Sir Valoric closed his eyes, feeling the tension melt away from his muscles. After their soak, they strolled through the city's gardens, taking in the beauty of the carefully tended flowers and trees. Scorch chased after butterflies, her laughter echoing through the air, and Sir Valoric couldn't help but join in, his deep chuckles causing the dragon to giggle even harder. As the sun began to set, Scorch and Sir Valoric settled into a cozy tavern, where they feasted on a sumptuous meal and listened to the city's musicians play lively tunes. The dragon's eyes shone with happiness as she tapped her claws to the beat, and Sir Valoric smiled, feeling a deep sense of contentment wash over him. It had been a day of rest and revelry, a much-needed respite from the dangers and uncertainties of their journey. And as they sat together, basking in the warmth and camaraderie of their friendship, Scorch and Sir Valoric both knew that this was a day they would treasure for a long time to come.
