The Unremarkable Childhood

Part 1

Charles Xavier sat at the dinner table, his eyes fixed on the intricately carved wooden spoon in his hand. It was a typical evening at the Xavier estate, with his parents, Jean-Luc and Liliane, chatting amicably at the head of the table. His younger sister, Liliane, giggled at something his mother had said, and Charles couldn't help but smile. At nine years old, Charles's life seemed idyllic. He lived in a beautiful mansion, surrounded by lush gardens and rolling hills. His family was wealthy and influential, and he had every opportunity at his fingertips. But despite the comforts and privileges, Charles couldn't shake the feeling that he was different. It started with little things. He would sense when his parents were worried or upset, even if they didn't say a word. He could anticipate his sister's needs, knowing exactly what game she wanted to play or what book she wanted to read. It was as if he had a connection to those around him, a connection that went beyond words. Charles's parents had always been supportive, encouraging his curiosity and creativity. But they had also been careful to keep his abilities a secret, fearing the reaction of the outside world. In 1955, the Cold War was in full swing, and the fear of communism and "otherness" was palpable. Charles's parents worried that if his abilities were discovered, he would be ostracized or worse. As the evening drew to a close, Charles excused himself, citing a need to work on his homework. He retreated to his room, a spacious sanctuary filled with books, toys, and a grand piano. He sat at the piano, running his fingers over the keys, and closed his eyes. For a moment, he focused on the silence, trying to clear his mind. And then, suddenly, he was flooded with thoughts. His parents discussing their day, the worries and concerns that lingered beneath the surface. His sister's excitement about an upcoming birthday party. The gardener's quiet satisfaction with the day's work. Charles's eyes snapped open, and he stared at the piano in wonder. How was this possible? He had always sensed things, but this was different. This was like...hearing people's thoughts. A shiver ran down his spine as he realized that he was hearing the thoughts of those around him. It was both exhilarating and terrifying, like discovering a secret that he wasn't sure he was ready to keep. Charles sat back, his heart racing, and wondered what other secrets his mind held. Little did he know, this was just the beginning of an extraordinary journey, one that would change him forever.
