Chapter 1: The Debt
Part 1
As I sat in the library, surrounded by stacks of nursing textbooks and notes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and purpose. I was finally on the path to achieving my dream of becoming a nurse, and I was determined to make it happen. My name is Emily, and I was 18 years old, fresh out of high school and eager to start my journey in the medical field. I scribbled down some notes on pharmacology, trying to make sense of the complex terminology and dosages. My mind wandered for a moment as I thought about my family and how they were struggling to make ends meet. My father's business had failed a few years ago, and we were still trying to recover from the financial blow. My parents had taken out loans and mortgages to try and keep afloat, but it seemed like the more they struggled, the deeper they sank. Just as I was getting lost in thought, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from my mom. My heart skipped a beat as I saw the worried expression on her face in the attached photo. She was frantically trying to reach me, and I knew something was wrong. I quickly called her back, and she answered on the first ring. "Emily, sweetie, I need to talk to you about your father's debt," she said, her voice trembling. My heart sank. I had known that my father had borrowed money from some... unsavory characters, but I had no idea how much trouble we were in. "What about it, Mom?" I asked, trying to stay calm. "They're coming due, Emily. Your father's debt to the Morano family is overdue, and they're not happy about it," she explained, her voice barely above a whisper. The Morano family? I had heard whispers about them in town - they were the Italian mafia, notorious for their ruthless tactics and iron-fisted control. I felt a chill run down my spine as I thought about what could happen if we couldn't pay them back. "What do they want, Mom?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, I thought my mom had hung up. "They want... they want you, Emily," she said finally, her voice cracking. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "What do you mean?" I asked, but I already knew. "They're willing to forgive the debt if... if you go with them. They want you to work for them, as a sort of... payment," my mom explained, her voice heavy with shame and fear. I was stunned. I couldn't believe that my parents would even consider such a thing, let alone agree to it. But before I could protest, my mom continued. "It's either that or... or they take the house, Emily. They'll take everything we have. Please, you have to do this. It's the only way," she begged, her voice desperate. I felt tears pricking at the corners of my eyes as I thought about what lay ahead. I was about to lose my freedom, my future, and possibly my life. And all because of my family's debt to the Morano family. Just then, a sleek black car pulled up outside the library. I watched through the window as a tall, imposing figure emerged from the shadows. He was dressed in a tailored suit, his dark hair slicked back, and his piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into my very soul. That was when I saw him - the infamous Don Morano, the head of the Morano family. And I knew that my life was about to change forever.
