"A Difficult Truth"
Part 18
The air was thick with tension as Ashley waited for Gerald to elaborate on his thoughts. She had expected a difficult conversation, but she had hoped that they could work through their issues together. But now, as she looked at Gerald's resolute expression, she felt a sense of dread. "I think we should end things," he said finally, his voice firm but laced with a hint of sadness. Ashley's heart sank. She had been afraid of this, but a part of her had held onto hope that they could salvage their relationship. She felt like she had been punched in the gut, and she struggled to catch her breath. "What?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "Why?" Gerald shrugged, his eyes avoiding hers. "I just think it's for the best. We're not working out, and it's not fair to either of us to keep going through the motions." Ashley felt a wave of panic wash over her. She thought about the baby, about the life they had created together. How could he just give up on them like this? "But what about the baby?" she asked, her voice shaking. Gerald's expression softened slightly, but his voice remained firm. "I'll do my part, Ashley. I'll be a good father, but I don't think that means we have to be together." Ashley felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She had been so sure that they could work through this, that they could be a family. But now, it seemed like that was not going to happen. "Okay," she said finally, trying to keep her voice steady. "If that's what you want, then I guess we should do it." Gerald nodded, his eyes never meeting hers. "I'll pack your things and give them to you," he said. "But you should get a job, get your own place. It's time for you to start taking care of yourself." Ashley felt a surge of anger at his words, but she bit it back. She knew that she needed to be strong right now, for herself and for her baby. She nodded, trying to keep her dignity intact. "Okay," she said again. "I'll do that." The silence that followed was oppressive, heavy with unspoken emotions. Ashley knew that this was it, that this was the end of their relationship. She stood up, trying to gather her things, but Gerald was already standing, his eyes fixed on hers. "I'll take care of everything," he said, his voice softening slightly. "Just take care of yourself and the baby, okay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. She turned and walked out of the coffee shop, leaving Gerald and their relationship behind her.
