Revisiting the Past
Part 6
My eyes drifted to Bethany's arms, and for a moment, I was captivated by the intricate tribal tattoos that covered her sleeves, a stark contrast to the elegant dress she wore. The designs seemed to dance across her skin, telling a story I couldn't quite decipher. I felt a pang of regret, realizing that I didn't know this new Bethany as well as I thought I did. As I looked back at her face, I took a deep breath and asked, "Of course I want to be part of their lives. But would you even let me? I still don't know what happened with you and Alex." The words hung in the air, a challenge to her, to see if she would open up and share the truth. Bethany's gaze never wavered, but I detected a flicker of emotion behind her eyes. She leaned back in her seat, a subtle smile playing on her lips. "You have a right to know," she said, her voice measured. "But it's not a simple story, Jake. There are... complications." I raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite myself. "Complications?" I repeated, my tone skeptical. "You and Alex, complicated? That's a new one." Bethany's smile grew wider, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "You don't understand," she said, her voice low and husky. "Alex and I... we had a falling out. A big one. But we've worked through it, and we're happy now." I studied her face, searching for any sign of deception. But all I saw was a confident, self-assured woman who seemed to know exactly what she wanted. "And what about me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What role do you see me playing in the kids' lives?" Bethany's expression softened, and for a moment, I saw a glimmer of the woman I used to love. "I want you to be a part of their lives, Jake," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "But I also want to protect them. From the pain and the heartache we've all been through." I felt a pang of sadness, realizing that Bethany still saw me as a source of pain, of heartache. But I also sensed that there was more to her story, that there were layers to her emotions that I couldn't quite grasp. "I understand," I said, my voice neutral. "But I need to know more. What happened with you and Alex? What really went down?" Bethany's eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flash of fear. But it was quickly replaced by a determined look, a look that said she was ready to face whatever came next. "I'll tell you," she said, her voice firm. "But you have to promise me one thing." I raised an eyebrow, curious. "What's that?" Bethany's gaze never wavered. "You have to promise me you'll listen, without judgment. Can you do that, Jake?"
