Chapter 16: A New Beginning
Part 16
Six weeks had passed since Ashley's interview at the job training program, and her life had undergone a significant transformation. She had graduated from the program and landed a part-time job at a local retail store. It wasn't a dream job, and the pay was minimal, but it was a start. For the first time in months, Ashley felt like she was doing something meaningful, and the sense of accomplishment was boosting her confidence. As she pulled out of her driveway, Ashley glanced in the rearview mirror to make sure Ender was buckled up and ready for the short drive to Rachel's house. He was chatting excitedly about his day at school, and Ashley couldn't help but smile. Her son was resilient, and she was grateful that he was thriving despite the challenges they had faced. Ashley pulled up to Rachel's house and helped Ender gather his backpack. "Hey, buddy, Mom's going out tonight, okay?" she said, trying to sound casual. Ender looked up at her with curious eyes, but didn't ask any questions. He knew that Ashley sometimes went out with friends, and he was used to staying with Rachel. As Ender disappeared into Rachel's house, Ashley took a deep breath and started the car. She was going on a date tonight with a guy named Ethan, whom she had met online a few weeks ago. They had hit it off immediately, bonding over their shared love of books and music. Ashley had been hesitant to tell Ethan about Ender, deciding that she wanted to get to know him better before revealing that she was a single mom. As she drove to the restaurant, Ashley's nerves began to get the better of her. What if Ethan was a weirdo? What if he didn't like her once he found out about Ender? She pushed the thoughts aside and focused on the road, trying to calm her racing heart. When she arrived at the restaurant, Ethan was already there, sipping a glass of wine at the bar. He stood up as Ashley approached, and she was struck by his warm smile. He was a few years older than her, with a rugged charm that made her feel at ease. "Hey," he said, as they exchanged a brief hug. "You look beautiful." Ashley blushed, feeling a flutter in her chest. "Thanks," she said, taking a seat next to him at the bar. "You don't look so bad yourself." As they ordered drinks and started chatting, Ashley found herself relaxing in Ethan's presence. He was easy to talk to, and she was surprised by how much they had in common. As the night wore on, Ashley found herself feeling more and more at ease, and she couldn't help but wonder if this might be the start of something special. But as they waited for their food to arrive, Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that she was living a little bit of a lie. She had told Ethan that she was a teacher, and that she loved her job. She had avoided talking about her personal life, and she knew that eventually, she would have to reveal the truth. For now, though, she was just going to enjoy the evening, and see where things went.
