Chapter 1: Isolation on the Sidelines
Part 1
Piper Wurzbacher trudged across the wet grass, her eyes fixed on the sleek, modern gymnasium looming before her. She had never been much of a fan of Japanese architecture, but Inarizaki High's sports complex was a sight to behold. As a varsity hockey player, Piper was no stranger to hard work and dedication, but everything about her new environment felt... off. She had moved to Japan over the summer, her parents seeking new opportunities in the country's booming tech industry. Piper had been hesitant to leave her friends and familiar routines behind, but her parents had encouraged her to try out for the school's hockey team. It was a bold move, considering she had never played hockey with a Japanese team before, and the language barrier didn't help. Still, she had been determined to make a fresh start. As she pushed open the gymnasium doors, a cacophony of shouts and cheers assaulted her ears. The Inarizaki High volleyball team was in full swing, their bright blue jerseys a blur as they moved across the court. Piper's eyes widened as she watched, mesmerized by their precision and teamwork. A gentle tap on her shoulder broke the spell, and Piper turned to find a lanky, bespectacled boy with a friendly smile. "Hey, you must be Piper-chan," he said, his Japanese pronunciation impeccable. "I'm Shinsuke Kita. We've been expecting you." Piper's face lit up with a tentative smile. "Thanks, Kita-kun. I'm still getting used to... everything." Kita chuckled. "I can imagine. It's not easy being the only foreigner on a team, especially when you're from a different sport. But don't worry, we'll help you adjust." As they talked, Piper's gaze wandered to the sidelines, where a quiet, imposing figure stood watching the team with an unreadable expression. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his eyes seemed to bore into the players as they moved across the court. "Who's that?" Piper asked, nodding discreetly toward the mysterious figure. Kita followed her gaze, his expression turning thoughtful. "That's Suna Rintarō. He's one of our team's wing spikers. A bit of a quiet one, but he's got skills for days." Piper's eyes lingered on Suna, sensing a kindred spirit in his reserved demeanor. For a moment, their gazes met, and Piper felt a jolt of surprise – Suna's eyes seemed to hold a deep sadness, a sense of isolation that resonated deeply with her own feelings. As the practice session drew to a close, Piper felt a sense of exhaustion wash over her. She had a long way to go to catch up with the team, and the pressure to perform was mounting. Kita, sensing her unease, placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Hey, don't worry, Piper-chan. We'll take it one step at a time. You're not alone here." Piper smiled, feeling a small sense of gratitude toward Kita. Maybe, just maybe, she was starting to find her footing in this strange new world. But as she glanced over at Suna, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was still very much alone.
