Chapter 21: Progress and Setbacks
Part 20
Three weeks had passed since Ashley's arrival at the rehabilitation center, and Nicole couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions as she pulled up to the building. She had been visiting her daughter regularly, and each time, she saw a little more of the Ashley she used to know. The detox process had been brutal, with Ashley experiencing cold sweats and vomiting, but she had persevered, and that gave Nicole hope. As she entered the center, Nicole was greeted by Karen, the receptionist, who smiled warmly and led her to the day room. Nicole's heart swelled with pride as she spotted Ashley sitting on a couch, surrounded by a few other patients. She looked tired but peaceful, and Nicole could see the progress she had made so far. Nicole approached Ashley, and they shared a warm hug. "Hey, kiddo, how are you doing today?" Nicole asked, taking a seat next to her. Ashley smiled, her eyes looking a little more vibrant than they had during their previous visits. "I'm doing okay, Mom. The detox was hell, but I'm feeling better now. Just a little weak." Nicole took Ashley's hand in hers. "I'm so proud of you, Ashley. You're doing great. I know it's not easy, but you're getting help, and that's all that matters." The counselor, Ms. Thompson, joined them, and they chatted about Ashley's progress. Nicole learned that Ashley was now nine weeks pregnant, and while it was a challenge, the center was providing her with the necessary care and support. As they talked, Nicole couldn't help but think about Axel, Ashley's boyfriend. She had tried to cut ties with him, but Ashley still had feelings for him. Nicole worried that Axel would try to contact Ashley and sabotage her progress. Ms. Thompson seemed to sense Nicole's concerns. "Don't worry, Nicole. We're keeping a close eye on Ashley's communication with the outside world. We're also working with her to develop coping strategies and a plan to deal with Axel's potential involvement." Nicole nodded, feeling a sense of relief. She knew that Ashley still had a long way to go, but for the first time in months, she felt hopeful about her daughter's future. As the visit came to an end, Nicole hugged Ashley tightly. "I'll be back to see you soon, okay? Keep doing great, kiddo." Ashley smiled, and Nicole could see the love and gratitude in her eyes. "I love you, Mom," Ashley said, her voice barely above a whisper. Nicole smiled back, her heart full of love for her daughter. "I love you too, Ashley. More than anything."
