**A Moment of Respite**
Part 13
As they caught their breath, Scorch and Sir Valoric settled against a nearby tree, their backs against the trunk as they surveyed the aftermath of their battle. The goblin horde lay defeated, their bodies scattered across the clearing. Scorch let out a satisfied sigh, her chest heaving with exertion. Sir Valoric turned to her, a hint of a smile on his face. "You're quite the warrior, Scorch," he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Scorch chuckled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Thanks, Valoric. You're not so bad yourself." As they rested, Scorch's curiosity got the better of her. She turned to Sir Valoric, her brow furrowed in thought. "Valoric, can I ask you something?" Sir Valoric raised an eyebrow, his expression attentive. "Of course, Scorch. What is it?" Scorch's voice was low, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Why don't you... react like the goblins did? Or like most men I've met? You're clearly attracted to me, but you don't... lewdly stare or make advances. What's different about you?" Sir Valoric's expression turned thoughtful, his eyes gazing into the distance. "I suppose it's just that I was raised to respect others, Scorch. My mother always taught me that a man's desires should be tempered by his respect for others. Forcing one's desires on someone else is not acceptable." Scorch's eyes widened, her expression surprised. "Really? I've never met anyone like that before." Sir Valoric shrugged, his smile wry. "I'm not perfect, Scorch. I've made my share of mistakes. But I've always tried to live by a code of honor. And that includes respecting others' boundaries." Scorch's gaze lingered on Sir Valoric's face, her eyes searching for something. She seemed to be looking for reassurance, or perhaps just understanding. Sir Valoric met her gaze, his eyes calm and steady. As they sat there, Scorch realized that she felt... at ease with Sir Valoric. She couldn't quite explain it, but there was something about him that made her feel like she could trust him. And that was a rare feeling for her, one that she cherished. After a moment, Scorch stood up, her movements fluid and athletic. "Well, we can't rest for long. We need to keep moving if we're going to find the source of the goblin infestation." Sir Valoric nodded, his face serious. "Agreed. Let's get moving."
