Chapter 1: Unlikely Encounter
Part 1
Maya Hart stood confidently at the front of her AP English classroom, her long, wavy blonde hair cascading down her back like a river of gold. Her bright blue eyes, reminiscent of a clear summer sky, scanned the room as she began to discuss the themes of The Great Gatsby. As a 29-year-old teacher, she had a way of commanding attention, and her students adored her for it. Maya's features, often described as a striking resemblance to Sabrina Carpenter, made her a stunning presence in the room. As she lectured, her gaze landed on Eric Walker, the captain of the Westerbrook High School soccer team. He was a junior, and one of her most diligent students. His dark hair was messy, as if he'd just rolled out of bed, and his eyes seemed to hold a perpetual air of sleepiness. But when he looked up at her, Maya caught a spark of intelligence and curiosity that she found endearing. Maya's thoughts drifted to her own complicated life. As a Kryptonian, Shadowhunter, banshee, and wielder of chaos magic, she had grown accustomed to living a double life. Her adoptive family, the Frays, had taken her in and taught her the ways of the Shadowhunters. Her adoptive mother, Jocelyn Fray, was a seasoned warrior, and her adoptive father, Luke, a werewolf. Clary, her adoptive sister and parabatai, was like a sibling to her. But despite their love and support, Maya struggled with her dark past. Her biological father, a Kryptonian with a troubled history, had left a lasting impact on her life - one that she was still trying to overcome. The physical and emotional scars he had left on her were a constant reminder of the life she had left behind. Maya's eyes refocused on Eric, who was scribbling notes on his paper. She felt a flutter in her chest, one she quickly dismissed as a reaction to her complicated history. She had vowed to keep her personal life separate from her professional one, especially when it came to her students. The bell rang, signaling the end of class. As the students began to pack up, Eric lingered, his eyes locked on hers. "Ms. Hart?" he asked, his deep voice low and smooth. "Yes, Eric?" she replied, her tone neutral. "I was wondering if I could talk to you about my essay. I'm having some trouble with the thesis statement." Maya smiled, a warmth spreading through her chest. "Of course, Eric. Let's discuss it after school. I have office hours then." Eric nodded, a smile tipping the corners of his mouth. "Great, thanks. I'll see you then." As the students filed out, Maya couldn't shake the feeling that this was the beginning of something... complicated. Little did she know that Eric's curiosity and her own secrets would soon entwine their lives in ways they never could have imagined. Maya gathered her things and headed out of the classroom, her thoughts consumed by the memories she'd rather forget. The sounds of the school faded into the background as she walked, lost in the shadows of her past. The cool Texas air hit her like a slap in the face, snapping her back to reality. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. The last thing she needed was to get close to a student, but there was something about Eric that drew her in. As she walked down the empty hallway, the sound of her heels clicking on the floor echoed through the corridors. Maya couldn't help but wonder what the future held for her and Eric, and whether she was ready to face it.
