Chapter 5: Sweet Celebrations
Part 5
The sun rose the next morning, casting a soft light into the Tsukino household, where anticipation for the evening’s celebration buzzed in the air. Ikuko was up early, brimming with excitement as she planned the perfect celebration for her daughter and Rei. There was much to do, and she took to the kitchen with gusto, selecting the freshest ingredients to create Usagi and Rei’s favorite dishes. Throughout the day, the atmosphere in the house was vibrant with laughter and chatter. Shingo helped his mother, eagerly chopping vegetables and teasing her about her gourmet ambitions. “Are you sure there’s enough food for everyone?” he joked, eyeing the staggering piles of ingredients. “Of course! They’re my daughter and her girlfriend; I want to make it truly special!” Ikuko replied, arranging flowers in a vase. “Is there a cake in this plan? Usagi loves cake!” Chibiusa piped up, her eyes practically sparkling with glee. She had taken upon herself the task of arranging the decorations, hastily hanging colorful streamers and balloons throughout the living room, transforming it into a festive venue. “Yes! A beautiful cake with strawberries and cream—just the way Usagi likes it!” Ikuko assured her, tapping her chin as she contemplated the finishing touches. Her heart swelled with pride and joy, knowing that her daughter felt supported and loved. As the day wore on, the dining table was adorned with an array of dishes: steaming bowls of miso soup, a dazzling array of sushi, and the centerpiece—a magnificent cake that could have made anyone’s mouth water. Finally, evening descended, bringing with it an air of excitement and a sprinkle of nervous energy. Just as Usagi and Rei arrived, the applause erupted from the gathered family members—their smiles wide, their cheers genuine. “Surprise!” Shingo shouted, nearly spilling his drink in enthusiasm. Usagi’s eyes widened, taking in the warm glow of the decorations and the rich aroma of home-cooked meals. “Wow! This is amazing, Mom!” she exclaimed, her face beaming with delight. Rei stepped in beside Usagi, her heart racing slightly as she took in the unexpected but warm welcome. The love radiating from every corner of the room filled her with sweetness, making her feel instantly accepted. “Welcome, Rei!” Ikuko called, beckoning her to the table with open arms. “I’m so glad you’re here to celebrate with us.” “Thanks for having me,” Rei replied, smiling shyly. As they all settled around the table, Ikuko raised her glass, declaring, “To Usagi and Rei! We are here to celebrate this wonderful milestone in your lives. May your journey together be filled with love and happiness!” “Cheers!” Everyone clinked their glasses together, and the room reverberated with joy. Throughout the meal, laughter and good-natured banter filled the air. Usagi felt a swell of gratitude to have her family embrace her relationship with Rei so wholeheartedly. They swapped stories, asked questions, and shared their own experiences, making Rei feel even more connected. “Can we talk about how cute you two are?” Chibiusa chimed in, her playful grin lighting up the room. “You should totally show me some couple poses for my drawing!” “Drawing?” Rei asked, raising an eyebrow, amused. “Yes! I want to capture your cuteness forever!” Chibiusa nodded enthusiastically. “Oh no,” Usagi laughed, tossing a piece of sushi playfully at her. “What if I look unflattering?” “Never!” Chibiusa insisted, her eyes wide with confidence. As the night unfolded, everyone soon found themselves gathered around the cake, where Ikuko made a dramatic move to slice the first piece. “Alright, Usagi, since this is your celebration, you get to make the first wish before blowing out the candles.” Usagi closed her eyes and thought hard, her heart racing as she focused on what she desired most. She didn't hesitate long before blowing out the candles, laughter echoed around the room. Rei watched, a smile tender upon her lips, feeling truly at home in this gathering. With plates filled with cake and laughter ringing in the air, Usagi felt a profound sense of joy. She turned to Rei, their eyes meeting like magnets, sealing the moment in sweet memory. “This is the best day,” she whispered, and Rei nodded, squeezing her hand under the table.
