A Call for Help in the Dark of Night
Part 9
Avery's mind was racing with the events that had just transpired. Elijah's words still lingered in her mind, and Sophia's mysterious presence had left her with more questions than answers. She knew she couldn't trust just anyone, but there was one person she had always been able to confide in, a person who understood her world and the dangers that came with it. She pulled out her phone and hesitated for a moment before dialing a familiar number. The phone rang several times before a soft voice picked up. "Avery?" the voice said, laced with concern. "Is everything okay?" Avery took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Hey, Aria. I need your help." Avery and Aria were twins, separated at a young age because being together had become too dangerous. They were supernatural, and their presence together seemed to draw unwanted attention. Avery had always felt a deep connection to her twin, and in times of crisis, Aria was the one person she knew she could trust. Aria's voice was calm and reassuring. "What's going on, Avery? You can tell me anything." Avery took another deep breath and began to recount the events of the past few days, from the mysterious note to her encounter with Elijah and Sophia. She told Aria everything, leaving out no details. Aria listened attentively, her voice filled with concern. "Avery, you need to be careful. It sounds like you're dealing with some powerful forces here. If Elijah is genuine, he might be able to help you, but you need to be cautious." Avery nodded, even though Aria couldn't see her. "That's what I'm thinking, but I don't know if I can trust him. And what about Sophia? She's connected to him, I'm sure of it." Aria's voice was thoughtful. "I think I can help you get some answers. Let me ask around to some people I trust, and I'll see what I can find out. I won't mention you specifically, but I'll try to get a sense of what's going on and what the ins and outs are." Avery felt a wave of relief wash over her. "That would be a huge help, Aria. If you could find out what's going on, I would really appreciate it." Aria's voice was reassuring. "I'll do my best, Avery. And if you need a place to stay, you're always welcome here. We can...figure something out." Avery hesitated, knowing that being together with Aria could put them both in danger. "I appreciate that, Aria, but I don't think that's a good idea. Last time...you know what happened." Aria's voice was understanding. "I know, Avery. But if it comes to that, we'll face it together. For now, let me see what I can find out. Get back to me as soon as you can, and I'll do the same." Avery nodded, even though Aria couldn't see her. "I'll talk to you soon, Aria. Thanks for being there for me." Aria's voice was warm. "Always, Avery. I'll get to the bottom of this. Just be careful, okay?" Avery hung up the phone, feeling a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in a while. With Aria on the case, she knew she would get some answers, and maybe, just maybe, she would be able to stay one step ahead of the forces that were tracking her.
