Chapter 1: A New Start at Neon Middle School

Part 1

The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over Neon Middle School, its brick façade reflecting shades of amber and gold as Rachel and Uriah Hino walked hand-in-hand, their backpacks swinging with every step. It was the last week of summer, and whispers of new beginnings floated through the air like the rustling leaves in the gentle breeze. Max, their neighbor and a sixth-grader, dashed past them, his excitement palpable as he called over his shoulder, "Did you hear about the Unified Track and Field program? It sounds awesome!" Rachel looked at Uriah, her bright green eyes lit with curiosity. "Unified Track and Field? I’ve never even heard of it. Is it like regular track?" Uriah shrugged, his brow furrowing. "I think it’s something for everyone—those who want to run and those who need a little extra support. Mom and Dad would love it!" The Hino household was no stranger to athletics, especially with Usagi and Rei’s passion for encouraging inclusivity and community activities. With a mix of anticipation and a bit of nervousness, they decided to head toward the gymnasium, where the sign-up meeting was being held that evening. As they entered the gym, the dim lights flickered overhead, illuminating the array of colorful banners hanging from the ceiling. On one side, tables were set up with sheets of paper and pens, while a small group of enthusiastic coaches welcomed newcomers with warm smiles. Usagi stood at the entrance, her iconic pigtails swaying as she waved at her children to join her. "Rachel! Uriah! Come here!" “Just as I thought, you guys are here!” she laughed, bending down to ruffle their hair affectionately. Rei, standing beside their vehicle, crossed his arms with a knowing smirk. "What do you think? Ready to run?" Rachel’s heart fluttered with a mix of excitement and apprehension as she glanced toward the sign-up sheet. There was a space for both runners and volunteers. But what if she wasn’t good enough? Uriah squeezed her hand reassuringly. "We can do this together, Rach. What do you say?" Taking in a deep breath, Rachel stepped forward and signed her name, her nerves transforming into determination. Uriah followed suit, and with each stroke of the pen, she felt the weight of doubt slowly lift. The voices of the coaches floated around them, promising a season filled with camaraderie and growth, whether on the track or cheering from the sidelines. After the meeting, practices quickly became a routine. The Hino family often walked to the school, practicing their runs together during the afternoons. Rachel discovered a love for the sport she never knew existed, feeling the rush of air against her face as she dashed down the track. Uriah, on the other hand, found his niche in supporting his sister, motivated by her enthusiasm and the friends he made along the way. As the season progressed, they were met with challenges and triumphs. Coaches encouraged team bonding through games and shared stories. Soon, Rachel started to form friendships that transcended barriers, her confidence blossoming in the warmth of acceptance. The meets were exhilarating, each race igniting a sense of belonging that Rachel had yearned for. As the end of the season approached, the duo found themselves focused on the ultimate goal: qualifying for the State Championship meet. With determination coursing through their veins, both Rachel and Uriah knew that the journey ahead would be filled with hard work, but they were ready to face whatever challenges came their way, hand in hand.
