Whispers from the Past

Part 5

As I settled in to listen to Old Tom's ramblings, I noticed a mixture of sadness and nostalgia etched on his weathered face. His eyes seemed to be gazing into the depths of his own memories, and I sensed that he was reliving moments from a bygone era. "You see, back then...the city was a different place," Old Tom began, his voice trailing off into a gentle murmur. "The demons had just started to make their presence known. They'd appear in the night, their dark forms looming over the city like specters. People were scared, but we had our own way of coping. We'd form our own little gangs, our own families, and look out for one another." He chuckled, a dry, mirthless sound, and shook his head. "Elara Calhoun...she was a beauty, even back then. Her hair was like gold in the sunlight, and her spirit was like fire. I remember the day the demon lord's men came for her. They were looking for a concubine, someone to...amuse their master. And Elara...she was chosen." Old Tom's gaze drifted off, lost in the haze of memories. "It was a grand ceremony, or so I've heard. The demon lord's men came with their finery and their pomp, and they took Elara away. Ryker, her brother...he was devastated. He'd always been protective of her, and I think he felt like he'd failed her somehow. But Mari...Mari was just a little thing, not even born yet. She wouldn't come for years after." He paused, collecting his thoughts, and I sensed a deep sadness behind his words. "After Elara was taken, things changed. The city became darker, more oppressive. The demons seemed to grow bolder, and people began to disappear. Ryker...he became a different person. He was driven, always searching for a way to get Elara back. And when Mari was born...he poured all his love into her, all his hopes. But Finn...poor little Finn...he was always a bit of a wild card." Old Tom's voice trailed off, and he stared into space, lost in thought. "I remember the day Mari disappeared," he said suddenly, his voice snapping back into focus. "It was like the whole city held its breath. People whispered about dark magic and demon rituals, but no one knew the truth. Ryker...he was frantic. He searched everywhere, but...but it was like she vanished into thin air." He fell silent, lost in his memories, and I sat there, listening to the sound of his ragged breathing. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting flickering shadows on the walls, and I felt a sense of unease settle over me. Old Tom's ramblings had stirred up more questions than answers, and I knew I had to dig deeper to uncover the truth about Mari's disappearance. As I sat there, I noticed a glint in Old Tom's eye, a spark of awareness that seemed to be growing brighter. "I think I might have more to tell you," he said, his voice low and conspiratorial. "If you're willing to listen."
