Reflection of Greatness

Part 30

As Kageyama and Hinata walked back into the arena, the bright lights and bustling atmosphere seemed to fade into the background as Kageyama caught sight of a figure standing off to the side, watching them with an intense gaze. Oikawa Tooru, the captain of the Aoba Johsai team, stood with his arms crossed, a look of admiration on his face. Kageyama's eyes narrowed slightly as he felt a shiver run down his spine. He had grown accustomed to Oikawa's intense stare, but it still had the power to unsettle him. Hinata, sensing Kageyama's tension, turned to follow his gaze and his eyes widened as he took in Oikawa's expression. Oikawa's eyes seemed to gleam with a newfound respect as he took in Kageyama's determined stance. He nodded to himself, as if acknowledging some unspoken truth. "You're a formidable opponent, Kageyama," Oikawa said, his voice low and smooth. "I've been watching you, and I must say, I'm impressed." Kageyama felt a flush rise to his cheeks as he met Oikawa's gaze. He wasn't sure how to react to the other team's captain's praise. Tanaka, who had been walking alongside them, stepped forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in Oikawa's intense gaze. "Thanks, Oikawa," Kageyama said finally, his voice steady. Oikawa chuckled, a low, husky sound. "Don't get too cocky, Kageyama," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You still have a long way to go." Kageyama's eyes flashed with determination, but he bit back a retort. Instead, he nodded curtly, his eyes never leaving Oikawa's face. Hinata, sensing the tension between the two, stepped forward, his eyes shining with curiosity. "What do you mean, Oikawa?" he asked, his voice friendly. Oikawa's gaze flicked to Hinata, and for a moment, Kageyama thought he saw a glimmer of something like affection in his eyes. But it was quickly replaced by his usual intense expression. "I mean that Kageyama has a certain... spark," Oikawa said, his voice thoughtful. "A spark that sets him apart from the rest. But it's not enough to guarantee victory. Not yet, at least." Kageyama felt a surge of determination course through his veins. He knew that Oikawa was right – he still had a long way to go. But he was ready for the challenge. As Oikawa turned and walked away, Kageyama felt a sense of resolve settle over him. He was going to work harder than ever before, and he was going to make sure that he and his team came out on top. Hinata's voice broke into his thoughts, his eyes shining with concern. "Hey, Kageyama, are you okay?" Kageyama nodded, his eyes still fixed on Oikawa's retreating back. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said, his voice steady. But as he turned to follow Hinata back to their teammates, Kageyama couldn't shake the feeling that Oikawa's words had left him with – a sense of determination, and a burning desire to prove himself.
