A Call to Serve
Part 7
A few weeks had passed since Emily's skills as a nurse had been recognized by the other soldiers, and she had been working tirelessly to help those in need. Her abilities had not gone unnoticed, as she had managed to save more limbs than a nurse double her age. The soldiers had begun to speak of her in hushed tones, marveling at her skill and dedication. One day, as she was tending to a young soldier's wounds, a messenger arrived at the camp. He was dressed in fine clothes, and his demeanor commanded respect. Emily couldn't help but notice the look of importance that radiated from him. The messenger scanned the area, his eyes locking onto Emily. He approached her, a letter in his hand. "Are you Emily, the nurse?" he asked, his voice formal. Emily nodded, curiosity etched on her face. "I am," she replied. The messenger handed her the letter. "This is for you," he said, his voice low. Emily took the letter, her fingers tracing the seal. It was embossed with the Washington family crest. She felt a surge of excitement mixed with a little fear as she broke the seal and unfolded the letter. The letter was from General George Washington himself, and he wrote of hearing about her remarkable skills as a nurse. He expressed his admiration for her work and asked her to join him in his battles, to bring her expertise to the Continental Army. Emily's heart swelled with pride and a sense of purpose. She had always wanted to do more, to contribute to the cause in a meaningful way. This seemed like an opportunity she couldn't pass up. She read through the letter again, her eyes scanning the words. She knew that this was a chance to make a real difference, to help turn the tide of the war. With a newfound sense of determination, Emily looked up at the messenger. "I'll do it," she said, her voice firm. "I'll join General Washington." The messenger nodded, a small smile on his face. "I thought you might," he said. "The General will be pleased. I'll escort you to his camp immediately." As Emily gathered her belongings and said goodbye to the other soldiers, she felt a sense of excitement and trepidation. She was about to embark on a new journey, one that would take her into the heart of the war. She followed the messenger, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew that she was taking a risk, but she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. She was ready to serve.
