A Closer Look

Part 12

Ashley laid back down on the examination table, her heart still racing with anxiety as Dr. Lee began to move the ultrasound machine's wand over her abdomen once again. He moved it slowly, stopping occasionally to take a closer look at the images on the screen. Ashley watched as the baby's features appeared and disappeared, but Dr. Lee's expression remained serious. As Dr. Lee continued to examine the images, Ashley couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What was he looking for? What had Mrs. Thompson seen that had made her so concerned? Dr. Lee's silence was unnerving, and Ashley found herself wanting to ask him what was wrong, but she didn't want to interrupt him. Dr. Lee stopped moving the wand again, and his eyes narrowed as he studied the image on the screen. He was quiet for a moment, his expression unreadable. Ashley's anxiety spiked as she waited for him to say something, anything. The silence was oppressive, and she felt like she was holding her breath. Finally, Dr. Lee spoke, his voice low and gentle. "Ashley, I think we need to take a closer look at the baby's heart." Ashley's heart skipped a beat as she processed his words. What did he mean? Was something wrong with her baby's heart? Dr. Lee continued to examine the images, his eyes scanning the screen with a practiced intensity. Ashley watched, her mind racing with questions and fears. What was he looking for? What would happen next? As Dr. Lee worked, Ashley couldn't help but think about all the things that could go wrong. She had heard stories about babies being born with heart defects, and she had always worried about that possibility. But she had also been reassured that her pregnancy was normal, and that her baby was healthy. The uncertainty was killing her. Ashley wanted to know what was going on, what Dr. Lee had found, and what it meant for her baby's health. But she also didn't want to hear bad news, didn't want to face the possibility that something was wrong with her child. Dr. Lee's voice broke into her thoughts, his words calm and reassuring. "Let's get some more images, and then we'll talk about what we've found." Ashley nodded, her heart heavy with concern, as Dr. Lee continued to examine the baby, searching for answers that would change everything.
