Chapter 1: An Unexpected Encounter

Part 1

As the 777 descended into Dubai International Airport, Captain Harris's voice came over the intercom, his calm tone a stark contrast to the excitement buzzing through the cabin. "Ladies and gentlemen, we'll be beginning our descent into Dubai. Please make sure your seatbelts are securely fastened and all electronic devices are in airplane mode." First Officer Alex Jenkins nodded to himself, his eyes scanning the instrument panel as he began the pre-landing checks. The flight had been uneventful, but that was exactly what they had hoped for. A smooth ride from London to Dubai was just what the crew needed after a long week of back-to-back flights. As the plane touched down on the runway, Alex let out a quiet sigh of relief. He was looking forward to a few days off, and the thought of finally getting to relax in his own bed was almost too much to bear. The cabin crew began their preparations for disembarkation, and Alex started to power down the systems. He was lost in thought, his mind already halfway to his flat and a cold beer, when he heard the captain's voice behind him. "Alex, can you get the cargo manifest for me? I need to file the report with dispatch." Alex nodded, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he retrieved the information. As he handed the captain the printout, he stood up, stretching his long legs. That was when he saw him – his best friend, Mike, standing in the doorway, a look of confusion on his face. For a moment, they just stared at each other, Alex's heart sinking into his stomach. How was he supposed to explain this? Mike had no idea he was a pilot. To him, Alex was just a "consultant" who traveled a lot. Mike's eyes widened as he took in Alex's uniform, and his face went from confusion to shock. "Alex? What...what are you doing?" he stuttered. Alex's mind went blank. He had never planned for this. He had always been careful to keep his two lives separate, and now...now he had no idea what to say. The captain, sensing the tension, cleared his throat. "Everything okay here, Alex?" Alex nodded, trying to play it cool. "Yeah, just...uh...Mike, what are you doing here?" Mike took a step forward, his eyes fixed on Alex's uniform. "I was meeting a friend for a drink and I saw you...I had no idea you..." The words trailed off, and Alex knew he had to say something. But what?
