The Web of Deceit Tightens
Part 25
As Rachel's eyes bore into the imposter's, James could see the faintest glimmer of panic rising to the surface. The imposter's gaze darted back and forth, as if searching for an escape route, but James knew she was trapped. Rachel's next question was like a blow, striking the imposter with precision. "Who took this photograph?" Rachel asked, her voice firm but controlled. The imposter's lips trembled, and for a moment, James thought she would collapse. But then, something seemed to click into place, and her expression hardened. "I don't know," she said, her voice flat. James's eyes narrowed. He didn't believe her. Not for a second. He glanced at Rachel, who was watching the imposter with an intensity that made James's skin crawl. "Let's try something else," Rachel said, her voice dripping with skepticism. She nodded to the officer, who brought in a second file. Rachel opened it and pulled out a stack of papers, which she began to shuffle through. As she worked, James's mind was racing. He knew they had the imposter right where they wanted her, but he also knew that she was hiding something. Something big. He leaned forward, his eyes locked on hers. "Look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way," James said, his voice low and urgent. "But either way, we're going to get to the truth. So you might as well just tell us what we want to know." The imposter's eyes flickered, and for a moment, James thought he saw a glimmer of desperation. But then, her expression hardened, and she looked away. Rachel's eyes locked onto the imposter's, and James could see the tension building. "I think it's time we brought in the expert," Rachel said, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. The officer standing outside the room nodded and left, returning with a woman James had never seen before. She was tall and imposing, with piercing green eyes that seemed to bore into the imposter's very soul. "This is Dr. Lee, a psychologist who's an expert in deception and manipulation," Rachel explained. "She's going to help us get to the truth." Dr. Lee nodded, her eyes fixed on the imposter. "I've reviewed the file, and I believe I can help," she said, her voice calm and authoritative. "But first, I need to speak with the subject alone." James's eyes narrowed. He didn't like this one bit. But Rachel nodded, and the officer escorted Dr. Lee and the imposter out of the room. As the door closed behind them, James turned to Rachel. "What's going on?" he whispered. Rachel's eyes locked onto his. "I think we're dealing with more than just a simple imposter," she said, her voice barely audible. "I think we're dealing with a highly trained operative, one who's been programmed to deceive and manipulate." James's mind was reeling. What did this mean? And what did Dr. Lee plan to do with the imposter? He knew one thing for sure: he was about to find out.
