Six Months Later: A New Reality
Part 10
Ashley sat on the couch in Karen's living room, staring blankly at the TV as she tried to process the mix of emotions swirling inside her. It had been six months since she started at her new school, and she had been trying to fit in and live a normal life. She had made friends, joined a club, and even started dating a boy named Jake. They had been together for a few months, and things had gotten serious between them. They had started having sex, and Ashley had been careful, but she was worried now. She had missed her period, and she was freaking out. She had always been regular, so this was a huge red flag. Ashley's mind was racing with worst-case scenarios. What if she was pregnant? What if Jake didn't want to be a father? What if Karen was disappointed in her? Ashley got up from the couch and began pacing around the room, her anxiety growing with each step. She needed to talk to someone, and Karen was the only person she trusted. She went to Karen's office and knocked on the door. "Come in," Karen called out. Ashley opened the door and stepped inside. Karen looked up from her computer and smiled. "Hey, kiddo. What's going on? You look worried." Ashley sat down in the chair in front of Karen's desk, trying to calm her racing heart. "I... I think I might be pregnant," she said, the words tumbling out of her mouth. Karen's expression turned serious, and she set her pen down on her desk. "Okay, let's talk about this. When was your last period?" Ashley shook her head. "I don't know. I've been irregular since... since everything happened. But I've been on birth control, and Jake always uses a condom. I just... I don't know." Karen nodded understandingly. "We'll get you tested, and we'll figure this out together. But first, I want you to know that no matter what happens, I'm here for you. You're safe, and you're loved." Ashley felt a lump form in her throat as she looked at Karen. She was so grateful to have her in her life. "I don't know what I would do without you," Ashley said, her voice shaking. Karen smiled and leaned forward. "You'll never have to find out, because I'm not going anywhere."
