Chapter 24: New Beginnings
Part 24
New Beginnings The warm smile on Karen's face seemed to falter for a moment as Ashley shrugged and looked down at her feet. "So, sweetie, tell us about you," Karen said, her voice gentle and encouraging. "How's school?" Ashley shrugged again, her shoulders barely moving. "Not good. I'm terrible at everything." The room fell silent, and Ashley could feel the eyes of her new family on her. She peeked up at them, expecting to see disappointment or frustration, but instead, she saw concern and curiosity. "Oh, come on, that can't be true," Emily, the girl who looked to be around Ashley's age, said, speaking up for the first time. "You're not terrible at everything." Ashley snorted, a small, humorless sound. "You'd be surprised." Karen's expression turned serious, and she glanced over at Dr. Lee. "Are we allowed to leave the facility?" she asked. Dr. Lee nodded. "Until 5 pm, you'll be free to spend time with the family. Then Ashley will need to return here to take her meds and pack her stuff. You'll sign the papers, and you can officially take her home with you then." Ashley's heart skipped a beat at the thought of leaving the facility behind. It was a strange feeling, like she was stepping into the unknown. Dr. Lee's eyes met Ashley's, and she smiled reassuringly. "You've made it this far, Ashley. You can do this." Karen stood up, and the rest of the family followed suit. "Well, let's make the most of our time then," Karen said, holding out her hand to Ashley. "Why don't we go get some lunch? We can talk more about school and, well, everything." Ashley hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. But something about Karen's warm smile and gentle tone put her at ease, and she took Karen's hand, feeling a small sense of hope rising up inside her. As they left the facility behind, Ashley couldn't help but wonder what the future held. Would she be able to fit in with this new family? Would she be able to make them proud? Or would she continue to struggle, stuck in her own personal hell? The thought sent a shiver down her spine, but with Karen's hand in hers, she felt a sense of determination rising up. She was going to make this work, no matter what it took.
