Disappointment and Disillusionment
Part 17
Ashley trudged home, her feet feeling heavy with disappointment. She had studied so hard for this test, and she had been so sure that she was going to pass with flying colors. But when she had walked into her teacher's office to collect her results, she had been greeted with a C. A C! After all that hard work, she had only managed a mediocre grade. As she walked through the door, Erica looked up from her book, a concerned expression on her face. "Hey, sis! How did it go?" she asked, her voice full of excitement. Ashley just threw the test result on the table, not even bothering to say a word. Erica's eyes widened as she picked it up, her face scanning the paper quickly. "A C?" Erica said, her voice laced with surprise. "But you studied so hard! I thought for sure you were going to get an A." Ashley shook her head, feeling a lump form in her throat. "I don't know, Erica. I just felt so confident, and then I got this...this C." Erica put down the paper and walked over to Ashley, giving her a hug. "It's okay, Ashley. A C is still a good grade. You're just being really hard on yourself." But Ashley wasn't comforted. She had been so sure that she was going to pass with a high grade, and now she felt like she had let herself down. She pulled away from Erica, her eyes welling up with tears. "I was so sure I was going to get an A," she said, her voice shaking. "I was going to get a tattoo to celebrate. And now...now I just feel stupid." Erica sighed, trying to think of something to say. "Ashley, you can't define your self-worth by one test result. You're so much more than just a grade. And besides, a tattoo is a big decision. You shouldn't be making it based on one test result." Ashley sniffed, wiping her nose on her sleeve. She knew Erica was right, but she just couldn't shake off the feeling of disappointment. She flopped down on the couch, feeling defeated. Erica sat down beside her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "We'll get through this, Ashley. We'll study for the next test, and you'll do better. I promise." But for now, Ashley just felt like crying. She had been so sure that she was going to ace that test, and now she just felt like a failure.
