Chapter 1: The Search Begins

Part 1

The sun had barely risen over the bustling streets of Republic City, but Korra was already pacing back and forth in her small apartment, her mind racing with worry. It had been two days since Asami had gone missing, and not a word had been heard from her. Korra had tried calling out to her spiritually, but there was only silence. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Mako, sensing her partner's distress, tried to reassure her that Asami was probably fine, that she would turn up any day now. But Korra knew Asami, and she knew that she wouldn't just disappear without a word. Not unless something was very wrong. Finally, Korra had had enough of waiting around. She strode over to Mako, who was sitting on the couch, and grabbed his arm. "We need to do something," she said, her eyes blazing with determination. "We need to find her." Mako sighed, but he knew better than to argue with Korra when she was in this state. "Okay, what do you have in mind?" he asked, standing up and following Korra as she headed for the door. Korra's plan was to go to Future Industries, Asami's workplace. Maybe someone there had seen or heard something. As they walked through the city streets, Korra's anxiety grew. What if Asami was in danger? What if she was hurt? When they arrived at Future Industries, Korra marched right up to the front desk and demanded to speak to Hiroshi Sato, the CEO. The receptionist, a pleasant-looking woman with a friendly smile, looked up at Korra and Mako in surprise. "I'm afraid Mr. Sato is very busy," she said. "Can I help you with something?" Korra's eyes narrowed. "I'm not leaving until I speak to him," she said, her voice firm. Mako placed a calming hand on Korra's shoulder, but she shook it off. "I'm Asami's partner," she said, her voice rising. "She's missing, and I need to know if anyone here has seen or heard anything." The receptionist's expression softened, and she picked up the phone. "I'll see if Mr. Sato is available," she said. A few minutes later, a harried-looking Hiroshi Sato emerged from the elevator. "Ah, Korra, Mako," he said, his eyes apologetic. "I had no idea Asami was missing. I've been in meetings all morning." Korra cut him off, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Do you know anything? Has anyone seen her? Did she say anything to anyone about where she was going?" Hiroshi held up his hands, placating. "Okay, okay. Let me see what I can find out. But Korra, I have to warn you, Asami often works on projects that take her out of the city. She may have just gone on a business trip." Korra's face set in a determined expression. "I need to speak to her colleagues," she said. "I need to know everything." Hiroshi sighed, but he nodded. "Very well. I'll take you to meet with her team. But Korra, please, you have to understand that Asami is a capable and resourceful person. I'm sure she's fine." Korra's eyes flashed with anger. "I don't care if she's capable and resourceful," she said. "She's my partner, and I need to find her." As Hiroshi led them to Asami's team, Korra's determination only grew. She was not going to let anyone stand in her way. She was going to find Asami, no matter what it took. What happens next?
