"A Spark of Recognition"
Part 10
Erica's eyes widened in shock as she stared at Ashley, her mind reeling with the sudden change in her friend's demeanor. One moment, Ashley was vacant and confused, and the next, she was speaking with a sarcastic tone that was unmistakably her. Ashley giggled, a mischievous glint in her eye. "I know that dumbass, I'm not dead. Sorry for scaring you. Now, when can I go home?" she said, her words tumbling out in a rush. Erica's face lit up with a mix of relief and joy. "Ash, is that really you?" she asked, her voice trembling with emotion. Ashley rolled her eyes, a sly smile spreading across her face. "Who else would it be, genius?" she replied, her tone laced with her usual sass. The nurse, who had been quietly observing the exchange, stepped forward. "I think we should get the doctor back in here," she said, her voice filled with excitement. "This could be a breakthrough." Erica nodded, still trying to process what was happening. She quickly pressed the nurse's call button to summon the doctor. As they waited for the doctor to return, Ashley's eyes began to roam the room, taking in her surroundings. She looked at Erica, then at the nurse, and finally at the various medical equipment scattered around the room. "What's all this stuff?" Ashley asked, her voice laced with disdain. "Do I really need all these machines beeping at me?" The nurse chuckled. "It's just the monitoring equipment, dear. It's to help us keep an eye on you." Ashley snorted. "Great, because I'm not capable of taking care of myself, apparently." Erica laughed, feeling a sense of normalcy return to her friend's behavior. "Ash, you're doing great," she said, squeezing Ashley's hand. The doctor burst into the room, a look of curiosity on his face. "I hear there's been a development?" he asked, his eyes locked on Ashley. Ashley grinned mischievously. "Yeah, I'm alive, and I'm ready to go home." The doctor smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Well, let's take a closer look at your vitals and see where we are."
