"Chapter 18: Shattered"
Part 18
Shattered The sun was setting over the horizon as Ashley and Gerald drove down the highway, Corey sleeping peacefully in his car seat. They had decided to take a drive to clear their minds, to get out of the house and enjoy the beautiful day. The music was playing softly in the background, and Ashley was lost in thought, her eyes fixed on the passing landscape. Gerald reached out and took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Hey, you okay?" he asked, his voice low and gentle. Ashley nodded, smiling weakly. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said. "Just enjoying the view." As they rounded a curve, a car cut them off, and Gerald swerved to avoid it. The tires screeched, and the car skidded across the pavement, out of control. Ashley's screams were drowned out by the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass. The world around her went dark, and Ashley's head spun. She tried to move, but her body felt heavy, unresponsive. She was pinned beneath something, and she couldn't quite remember what had happened. As her vision began to clear, Ashley saw that the car was a twisted wreck, the windshield shattered, and the roof crumpled. She turned her head, searching for Gerald, but he was slumped over, unconscious. A wave of panic washed over her as she called out his name, but he didn't respond. And then she saw Corey, his car seat lying on the floor, empty and broken. A scream built in her throat as she realized that he was gone. She frantically searched the wreckage, her heart racing with fear. That's when she saw him, lying a few feet away, his tiny body motionless. Ashley tried to move, to crawl out of the wreckage and reach him, but her body refused to cooperate. She was trapped, unable to move, unable to reach her baby. Tears streamed down her face as she called out Corey's name, over and over, but there was no response. She was paralyzed with fear, unable to do anything but lie there, helpless and screaming. Gerald stirred, groaning in pain. "Ashley," he whispered, his voice weak. "Ashley, can you hear me?" Ashley tried to respond, but her voice was hoarse from screaming. She managed a weak nod, and Gerald's eyes locked onto hers. "Corey," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Gerald's eyes scanned the wreckage, and when he saw Corey lying on the ground, he let out a cry of despair. "No, no, no," he whispered, struggling to free himself from the wreckage. Ashley lay there, unable to move, as Gerald crawled out of the car, his movements slow and painful. He stumbled towards Corey, his face contorted in agony, and Ashley's heart broke all over again. She was trapped, unable to help, as the man she loved and their child lay in danger, and she could do nothing but watch.
