The Unexpected News

Part 1

Dorothy Zbornak, a sharp-tongued and quick-witted woman in her mid-50s, sat in the doctor's office, staring blankly at the wall as she waited for the results of her routine check-up. Her husband, Lucas Hollingsworth, a charming and handsome man of the same age, held her hand, chatting with the doctor about the latest baseball game. The waiting room was filled with the usual sounds of coughing and rustling newspapers, but Dorothy's mind was elsewhere. Dr. Thompson, a kind-faced woman with a warm smile, entered the room, and Dorothy's heart sank. The doctor's expression was a mixture of professional courtesy and genuine surprise. "Well, Dorothy, it looks like we have some news to share," she said, her voice measured. Dorothy's eyes snapped back to the doctor, and she felt a cold dread creeping up her spine. "What is it?" she asked, trying to sound nonchalant, but her voice betrayed her. Dr. Thompson smiled and began, "It appears that you're pregnant, Dorothy. Congratulations!" The words hung in the air like a challenge, and Dorothy felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Lucas's eyes widened in surprise, and he squeezed her hand. "Pregnant?" he repeated, a mix of excitement and shock on his face. Dorothy's mind reeled as she processed the news. She was going to be a mother. At her age. She thought about all the things she'd never thought she'd do: changing diapers, attending PTA meetings, and singing nursery rhymes. The image of herself as a mother was jarring, to say the least. The doctor continued to explain the details, but Dorothy tuned her out. She was too busy thinking about the implications. How would this change their lives? They were comfortable in New York City, with their friends, their routines, and their quiet marriage. How would they manage with a baby? As they left the doctor's office, Lucas turned to Dorothy, a grin still plastered on his face. "Well, this is certainly a surprise," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. Dorothy shook her head, still trying to wrap her mind around the news. "I know. I didn't exactly plan on this." Lucas pulled her close, his voice filled with reassurance. "We'll figure it out, Dorothy. We'll make this work. We're in this together." But as they walked out of the office, Dorothy couldn't shake off the feeling that their lives were about to take a dramatic turn. And she wasn't sure if she was ready. Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of Lucas's phone ringing. He pulled it out and answered, "Hello? Ah, Rose! What's up? Oh, yeah, we've got some news to share... Yeah, we're on our way." Dorothy raised an eyebrow. "Rose?" Lucas smiled. "I guess the news will have to wait. We've got a dinner date with the girls." Dorothy sighed, feeling a sense of trepidation. She knew that this news would spread like wildfire through their social circle. And she was right. As they walked to their car, Dorothy couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them. As they drove away, Lucas turned to her and said, "You know, I've been thinking. Maybe it's time we move back to Miami." Dorothy's eyes widened in surprise. "Miami? Why?" Lucas shrugged. "I don't know. It feels like a good time for a change. And we could use the support of our friends." Dorothy thought about it for a moment. Maybe it was time for a new chapter in their lives. Maybe Miami was the perfect place to start again. The conversation was just beginning, and Dorothy was ready to see where it would take them. Little did she know that their lives were about to change in ways she never could have imagined.
