Chapter 12 – Something More Than Ordinary

Part 1

Esme hung up the phone, her heart racing with excitement. She couldn't help but feel a little nervous about her upcoming date with Joel, but she was also thrilled at the prospect of spending more time with him. She took a deep breath, smoothing out her dress and trying to calm her nerves. The house was quiet, and she knew that her father and Sarah were asleep, but she still felt like she was being stealthy. She grabbed her purse and headed out the door, making her way to Joel's truck, which was parked in the driveway. The night air was cool and calm, and Esme felt a sense of peace wash over her as she approached the vehicle. Joel was already inside, waiting for her, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. "Hey," he said, his voice low and smooth. "You look amazing." Esme felt a flutter in her chest as she slid into the passenger seat. "Thanks," she replied, trying to sound casual. "You don't look so bad yourself." Joel chuckled and started the engine, pulling out of the driveway and onto the quiet streets of the neighborhood. They drove in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the only sound being the hum of the engine and the soft music playing in the background. As they approached the outskirts of town, Esme caught sight of a sign that read "Lakeview Restaurant". "We're going there?" she asked, her curiosity piqued. Joel nodded. "Yeah, I thought it would be a nice change of pace. They have great food, and the view is amazing." Esme's stomach growled in anticipation as Joel pulled into the parking lot. The restaurant was situated on the edge of a lake, and the lights from the building reflected off the water, creating a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. As they stepped inside, Esme was greeted by the friendly hostess, who showed them to their table by the window. The view was indeed stunning, and Esme felt a sense of wonder as she gazed out at the lake. Their waiter, a friendly man with a thick Texas accent, came over to take their order. Joel recommended the grilled salmon, and Esme opted for the steak, feeling a little adventurous. As they waited for their food to arrive, they chatted about everything and nothing, their conversation flowing easily. Esme felt like she was getting to know Joel better, and she was surprised by how much they had in common. The food arrived, and they dug in, savoring the delicious flavors and textures. Esme was impressed by how tender the steak was, and Joel raved about his salmon, saying it was the best he'd had in a long time. As they finished their meal and prepared to leave, Joel reached across the table and took Esme's hand. "I'm really glad you could make it tonight," he said, his eyes locked on hers. Esme felt a spark of electricity as their hands touched, and she smiled, feeling a sense of connection with Joel that she hadn't felt in a long time. "Me too," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. As they walked out of the restaurant, Joel turned to her and said, "I have a surprise for you. Follow me." Esme's curiosity was piqued, and she followed Joel to his truck, wondering what he had planned. As they drove away from the restaurant, she felt a sense of excitement and anticipation, unsure of what the night had in store for her.
